A Personal Website. The Apache web server is installed by default on Fedora 11. If you've included the web server package group during the installation process. Otherwise you can install it with tools such as the Add Remove Software Tool. Once installed, you'll need to make sure Apache is enabled and active. One way to do so is with the Services Tool. To open it up click System, Administration, Services. I've already opened it up here and the Apache service is also known as HTTPD, so let's start the service to make sure it's running and we'll also need to enable the service to make sure it starts the next time we boot Linux. OK, now that it's started and running, let's navigate to HTTP Local Host. We get the Fedora test page. Excellent. We get the same result navigating to the loopback address, which should correspond to Local Host. The next step is to create a web page and it doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, for test purposes text files are sufficient for the web pages since web pages for Apache must be saved to the var/www Or -/html directory by default. We'll need to do it with administrative privileges. The standard web page for a server is Index.html. One text editor discussed in a different video is GEdit. So let's open the var/www/html directory and create the Index.html file and type in some simple text. We save the file and close. Now let's try this test page again using the loopback address. Viola; that's the text I just typed in and just to confirm, it works when I navigate to Local Host. But that just makes a website accessible to the local system. And that's not useful. You want to share websites but to make sure the website is accessible, you need to check your firewall. To access the Firewall Configuration Tool, you want to click System, Administration, Firewall. I've already opened it up here and to allow access to your now configured local web server, you'll want to make HTTP a trusted service. I select that option and click Apply. I click yes and the new firewall is configured. Now, I can go to a remote system. This is the Linux system. I'll go to my Windows system and go to the IP address of the Linux system. And viola, I have my test web page. Now you have the basics on what you need to do to create a personal website for a local network. As desired, additional web pages can be added to the var/www/html directory.
