Remote VNC Control. Sometimes you just need to control the Desktop system remotely perhaps you want access from a remote site. In such cases you can set up Linux with a system known as VNC, short for Virtual Network Computing. To that end I use the vino package as a VNC Server and have already installed it separately as it requires over 100 additional packages. Once installed I can get it going with the vino-preferences command and as we configure VNC with vino-preferences you can enable allowing others to be your Desktop and once connectivity is confirmed you're told how you can connect to this Desktop from a remote system. In this case we would connect to this particular IP address. If desired you can allow users to control what happens on your Desktop, or you can disable that. With respect to security if you're going to be at your Desktop and want the help of others you can be there to confirm access to your system by others. Generally you'll want to enable password protected access to remote systems. If you accept the option to configure network automatically to accept connections this assumes you have a router or a gateway such as the router connected to your high speed Internet connection which conforms to the UPNP protocol which supports automatic discovery. The Notification Area supports one of three choices for icons depending on whether the system is on or if the system is connected. Now let's move to a remote VNC client. To speed up this process I've already installed the vinegra Client on a remote system and once that's installed you can start it with on a GNOME Desktop by clicking Applications, Internet, Remote Desktop Viewer. So, let's go to a remote client here. I've already started vinegra, the Remote Desktop Viewer. It's already discovered my Remote Desktop, but let's just click Connect. I use the IP address described earlier. I can set it up in a Full Screen Mode if desired and then I click Connect, and I have to remember the password I had set up for the connection. I click OK, and look at that. I can see the Remote Desktop and there was a notification to any user who was logged on to the Remote Desktop that they're being watched.
