Working with Models / Ubershape

Subtitles of the Movie

The second way to create an object inside of Animator is to use a plug-in called Ubershape. Let's go up to the Plugin Menu in the Menu Bar, and select Ubershape. A new dialog opens with a lot of options. Ubershape basically creates primitive 3D objects within Animator. If we click on the Shape Type we see a myriad of objects listed. We can create a Plane, or a Cube, or a Sphere, or Teapot, or Rock. There are all sorts of objects here that we can select. Each object has different attributes in parameters that you can dial in. But if you notice, over here on the right, each object has Resolution fields. For instance, the Sphere's Resolution is determined by Latitude and Longitude. Let's go down and select Teapot. Here we see Resolution is defined by Detail Level, and there are two fields here: one for a value for Electric Image, actually Animator, and one for the Camera application. The reason there are separate detail levels is so that you can work within Animator at a resolution that is much smaller and therefore faster to animate with, and have a higher details level set for Camera when it renders. Let's set the Detail Level for Animator to 2 and leave the Detail Level for Camera at 10. Click OK, and here's our Teapot. It looks very crude inside our World View Windows here inside of Animator, but if we do a Snapshot, let's see what Camera sees. Camera sees a much smoother and filled out version of the Teapot; that's because the Detail Level for Camera was set much higher. Let's close that. Ubershape is a great tool for creating simple objects for use as a sky dome, for example, or a room's floor, or a ground. It's very fast so you can go back and change the model settings at any time. I'll double-click the Ubershape model and bring up its Group Info Window. See this Plugin button? Let's click that, and we'll just do a quick switch to a Sphere, click OK, and now our Teapot is turned into a Sphere.
