There are two Shader Palettes available to you in Animator so you don't have to click the Add Button in the Material Window and hunt for the shader you want through an open dialog. Let's open the Shader Palette by selecting it in the Material Menu. Here are all of your shaders in thumbnail form. You may see shaders in my palette that you don't have. That's because I bought a few more third-party shaders. To add a shader to your material, just drag it from the Shader Palette to the Material Channel you want to apply it to. This will always put the shader at the top of the texture stack. You can move it down if you want. The second palette is also found in the Material Menu. Select Shader Variance Editor. You can also see all of your shaders here. Hover your cursor over a thumbnail and a tool tip tells you its name. Hold down the Spacebar to scroll through the list. Let's get down to this shader, Thin Film, and click on it. To the right you see several versions of the shader that I've already saved. These are called Variants. You can variants of your shader and use them again later on with other models or in other projects. To create and save a variant, just hold down the Option Key and drag the shader's name from the Material Window to the Variant Pane in this palette. You will be instructed to name the variant. Or, if you don't have a shader in the project you want to save, you can create a variant directly in this palette. Just click the Add Button at the top, then double click the variant and make your changes. Click OK. You can edit any variant at any time this way too. You can even get an interactive preview of how the shader works with light by Command Dragging on the variant. Shader variants are saved in a Shader's Folder in the main Electric Image Folder. They have a .var extension. So this ThinFilm.var file contains all of the several variants for that particular shader. If you get a ,.var file from someone who has their own variants to share, then you can merge the two files into one with the Merge Button at the top of the palette. If you edit a shader and really like the results, then it's a good habit to save that version or variant for future use.
