Setting Up a Scene / Hierarchies & the Project Window pt. 2

Subtitles of the Movie

We already know that a child follows a parent, but it's actually following its parent's Pivot Point, and we already know that the Pivot Point does not have to be at the center of the object, so if I rotate my Parent model, the Child also rotates around that same Pivot Point. Let's re-parent, and open the Link Editor for the parent. Now, I'll rotate the parent and I'll rotate it around the Z-axis, and if I change the Pivot Point to below that point in the parent Ð well, let's move the Pivot Point way down this time Ð and now the child is following its parent's off-center Pivot Point as it rotates. If I select the child, the child rotates around its own Pivot Point, which is still around its own center. I can also limit how the child relates to its parent. I can do this through the Link Type as we've seen, and through the simple Inherent buttons. Let's open a simple animation. In this animation the blue gear is rotating, scaling, and moving up and down. If I parent the red gear to it, then the child, this red gear, follows the blue parent. Let's play it back. It rotates, moves up and down, and scales. I'll undo that parenting, and let's look at the Link Editor for the red gear. In the Inherit tab, let's turn off Inherit Position and Scale. Now we'll parent again to the blue gear and Play. Notice the red gear rotates, but only around the blue gear's initial position, because Inherent Position is off for this child it can only rotate around the first position of its parenting, likewise, the child also does not inherit its parent's scale. So far we've been setting up hierarchies between models. We can actually set up a parent-child relationship between any objects. You can link lights to models, models to cameras, or any combination. One more example. In this project we have a pair of lights, blue and green, attached to a camera. If I select the camera I can move all three inside this tube. When I move the camera the lights move with this, sliding the tube the same distance throughout our animation. Setting up hierarchies enable you to control several objects with one parent. This is extremely helpful when you're creating your animation, but also it helps you organize your project, as we'll see.
