Introduction / Camera Application
Subtitles of the Movie
We've already had a brief preview of EI's rendering application when we took a Snapshot of our scene. Let's do that one more time. Again, we can take a Snapshot from any view, but let's do it from the Camera View this time. The rendering application, also called Camera, launches and renders that frame. Now, don't be confused by the camera names. When we're referring to a camera while we're in Animator, we're talking about a virtual movie camera inside our 3D scene, like this one. When we're actually rendering an image or an animation, the Camera application, which is a separate program from Animator, launches, takes the information give to it by Animator, and renders it. So, the camera inside of Animator is like the film camera that you use to take pictures with, and the Camera application is like the photo lab that you take your film lab to be processed and it returns the images back to you. Now, before we get too far ahead of ourselves, there's a step we need to take to help the Camera program run at its best. From the Finder launch Camera by double-clicking on it. While Camera is rendering, this Window shows all the particulars of your scene: textures, reflections, number of polygons, et cetera. Also, if you're rendering in animation, the frame number Camera's currently rendering appears above this little Progress bar down here. The square to the right is a Preview of the image as it is rendering. Go to the Menu Bar and select File, then select Set Memory Usage. A new little dialog will appear allowing you to type in the amount of RAM that you want to use for Camera. Make sure you put as much RAM as you can into that field, but not so much that there's nothing left for your computer's operating system to run. I have 8 gigabytes of RAM in this machine, so setting 2 gigabytes of RAM for Camera is fine. The more RAM that you allocate to Camera, the better Camera will perform, and generally your renders will render faster.
