In this lesson, I want to talk to you about a few other pieces of terminology that you need to make sure that you're aware of, because you will probably run into them as you sell things online. The first thing I want to talk to you about is Affiliate Programs. Now basically, if you're going to be an affiliate, you advertise products for another company on your site and you earn money. This is Amazon.com's affiliate program. So if you want to do this as an option to add to your site where you sell items, you simply find a business that offers things that you like to sell, then you're going to sign up for their affiliate program and then you will put links to their items on your site. Those links are going to hold your affiliate account information so you get credit if people actually follow that and go buy those items. Another piece of terminology that you need to understand is Alt Text. That little Salina Public Library.org that popped up when I laid my mouse there is Alt Text. Basically, when you insert graphics into a website you add Alt Text, which is alternate text. As you can see right here, there is my alternate text. What happens is, if somebody's screen displays everything and does not display that graphic, it will show this text as its placeholder so people understand what's actually there. Now when you create your site, no matter where it's at, another word that you need to be aware of is backing up. Make sure even if you have a place that holds your store like Shopify, that you make sure everything is backed up. Now they may provide it if they're your host or they may not. You need to find that out. You not only need to make sure your site is backed up, but that database that is holding all of your information Ð make sure all your products, pricings, and orders are backed up. The next thing you need to understand is the word Domain. Amazon has its own domain. The domain is your URL, your Uniform Resource Locator. For example, Amazon is its domain,.com means it's a commercial domain. Now if I click on something you'll notice this thing fills up. Basically this is the path to each directory of where that information is stored. Now if you see the http that stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol, and remember the S as we've talked about before means it's 00:02:42 ] secure. I can go ahead and give them my credit card information and it's going to be encrypted so nobody can steal it. Now if you're going to buy a domain name you can do that just about anywhere. Go Daddy provides it, Register dot com, Network Solutions Ð if you're going to buy a domain name make sure it's short, make sure that it has key words in the domain name that fit your company's products. Now sometimes you will need a domain name, sometimes you won't, it just depends on what type of store you set up. For example, Shopify here, I can use a new or existing domain name. I could actually buy one through them to make it a little bit faster and easier, or a lot of stores will just provide you a free domain name. It'll be your store name.myshopify.com. It's not actually unique but it still gives you a name. So it's completely up to you once you get going here, whether you're going to make it unique and buy a domain name, or you're just going to utilize that store's path for your domain name. Another thing you need to understand is the word Download. If you offer something for sale on your site you need to make sure you understand what download means. If I'm offering an eBook that people can download, then that is meaning that they take that file and they put it on their computer. Or, they may purchase an eBook to put on their Kindle Fire. They're going to take that and download it to their Kindle Fire. It also might be thrown on their smart phone. That's another option. But download means taking the data file from the remote computer down to the local computer or local device. And last but not least is SEO Ð Search Engine Optimization. Over here is a VTC course. It's a quick course on SEO. Basically you learn different methods to increase traffic to your site. Search engine optimization will just help people when they search Google for your products, make your site come up quicker. Basically if you're page titles, headers, links, et cetera, are created well and they all match, meaning they all go together for the theme of your site, there's not weird things here and there, that is good SEO. Now search engines do change the different ways they figure SEO out so as you go along you kind of have to keep up with that and keep updating your site to make sure your site is coming up quickly when someone does a search. So if you're interested in learning more about SEO take a look here about going through the VTC course. Alright. We've learned, again, some more terminology that you need to understand with E-commerce Ð affiliates, alternate text, backups, domain names. How to download and what download means and search engine optimization. Let's keep going and learning more about E-commerce.
