Working with 3D Objects / Selecting and Naming pt. 4

Subtitles of the Movie

Now let me show you one other feature here on the selection floater. It's also on the select by name dialog, that you may find useful and that's the case sensitive option right here, And that causes this list of names to sort taking case into account. Right now they are sorted not taking case into account. To see how this works, let's change some of these names. Double click on head and highlight that over here and typing in caps, type in all caps, head. So if something is very important I might put it in all caps. And let's take hair03, double click on that and I am going to put that in all caps. And then let's click on nose and I will just put in an initial cap on that and how about hair02. Now this implies that for some reason hair02 is more important to me than some of the other hairs, and hair03 is the most important hair of all. So right now as you can see, even though I've changed capitalization, the sorting is exactly the same. They are just sorted according to the first letter of the word, not taking capitalization into account. But if I click on the sensitive, capitalized words are sorted to the top. So for example, hair03 because it’s in all caps comes above hair02 and hair02 comes above hair01. Without that, the hairs are just sorted 00, 01, 02, 03 with case sensitive they are sorted according to the case. And I also like this because you can see these all cap items more easily. And you see nose which normally would be at the bottom of the list, it gets sorted higher up in the list. So if you have long lists of items you can put your important items at the top using this case sensitive option. So let's click on the X in the upper right here to get out of the selection floater. And the last thing I would like show you about selecting is the selection lock toggle. And what this does, it allows you to lock a selection in, so that you cannot unselect what you got selected and you can't select anything new. So for example, if I select the head, click on the selection lock toggle then I go out and try to select something else, I am clicking on these different objects but nothing else will select. The lock toggle doesn't affect select by name. So for example, I go up to here select by name, it shows me that the head is selected. I select the mouth and it has changed. But if I try to select something else now, I am clicking on these objects but they won't select. The selection floater by the way doesn't override the selection lock. And if you are using the selection lock alot you might prefer the keyboard shortcut, spacebar. So summing up our selection features, we have a number of tools on the toolbar. The select object tool, the select by name tool, which by the way can also be reached by the keyboard shortcut H. Just simply type H. We have the selection region. We have the selection filter and window crossing. We also have the selection lock toggle down at the bottom. And then we have a number of selection options on the edit menu. Select all, select none, select invert, select by, the region selector and named selection sets. And then over on the tools menu, we have the selection floater. And we also have rename objects, which isn't a selection feature strictly speaking, But it's mainly helpful because it makes selecting by name easier. ave rename objects, which isn't a selection feature strictly speaking, But it's mainly helpful because it makes selecting by name easier.
