Working with 3D Objects / Selecting and Naming pt. 2

Subtitles of the Movie

Also on the main toolbar, we have a selection filter which allows us to filter what kinds of objects we're going to be selecting. So for example, if I go to geometry, only geometry will be selected. Other things such as shapes, lights, cameras, helpers and so on would not be selected. Or I could select just lights or just cameras. In this case, we only have geometry in the scene. So why don't we put a couple of lights in the scene so that we can see how that filter feature works. Let's put that on lights and this is going to be a two step process starting with right clicking on the view port label and going down to configure and click right here on default lighting. Why don’t we put two lights in. This is often a good way to start customizing your lighting by the way, just put in the default lights and then start adjusting them from there. And click OK. And the second stage of this process is going up to the views menu and go down to add default lights to scene and click. Let’s just click OK. The perspective window is not necessarily the best place to be looking for these lights that we just put in the scene. So I am going to use the keyboard shortcut Alt W, and zoom extents. Now we can see in the other view ports that we have two lights in the scene. So now let's try our selection experiment. We have our filter set on lights, and we drag, it selects the light but it doesn't select any of the geometry. Put the filter back on all and do that same selection and it selects the light and the geometry. And let's try one more thing here. We'll go to geometry and we’ll draw the selection box. Now it selects the geometry but not the light and let's get back in the perspective window. Click the next toggle. Now there are also a number of selection tools on the edit menu. So let's takes a look at those. For example, we can select all and you'll notice that because we’ve got the filter on geometry, the lights are not selected. We change the filter to all and go back and do select all, the lights will be selected. And we can click select none that unselects everything, that's the same as control D. Select invert, selects everything that isn't selected and deselects everything that is selected. So right now, select invert will select everything. But if I for example, select just the geometry and then select invert, only the lights are selected. There are also some options here that duplicate the toolbar functionality and add a little bit. So for example, you can choose your selection region, rectangular, circler, fence or lasso here, just as you could here. And you can also select by name which was also one of the options here. But in addition on the edit menu, you have an option to select by color and that will select all objects of the same color. And then region window or crossing, duplicates the functionality that we saw here with the window crossing button. 03:50.0] And then region window or crossing, duplicates the functionality that we saw here with the window crossing button.
