Pencil Tool. So, with my Pencil Tool I'm going to go and press F10 and you can see there's a little disclosure triangle indicating that there are more options under our Pencil Tool, by far the most options of all the tools, and not all of these will always be available to you, depending on what you're actually using the Pencil for. So, I can use the Pencil to actually draw in Waveforms. If there are pops or clicks, I've got things in my Audio that I want to fix, so I've got some little pop that happens in here, if I go down to the Sample Level, I'm actually changing the way the Waveform is itself in the Audio file. So this is changing the Audio file itself. If I'm zoomed way out then I don't have that function, so now when I try to do that you can see that the Pencil becomes grayed out. So, that's one function of just actually using it to edit within the Track, or the Region itself. I'm going to go down to my Automation. I can use this for Offline Automation where I want to draw in Volume, so I'm doing actually Freehand Volume, and that is my first option here, so just Freehand, whatever I seem to draw is where it's going to draw those points. So, Align Tool, if I want to have this smooth, I want to have from one point to the next, then that's where I'd use the Line Tool. Watch what happens as I go to a few of these others. So I want to go to Parabolic here and you can see that doesn't work even though it shows up as an Option, because it's actually something that I would use in a different window. Same thing when I go to this S-Curve Ð not an option, but I can go into these other Modes. So, Triangle allows me to actually draw Automation to the Grid, so I go to my Square and Random, same types of things. Random, like the name implies, draws in various random Automation. So, in this case it's Volume. So, that's a few different places we can use the Pencil Tool. If I go in and decide to actually see my Tempo as well, let me go ahead and check that, so I want to see my Tempo Ruler and then click this disclosure triangle and you can see Random is actually grayed out. If I go back into the Line Tool, I can go ahead and draw from one point to the next. Keep in mind that you do have to have the Conductor on for this to work, so I just held down Command as I clicked on the Plus button, Control on Windows, and with the Conductor on I can then change and draw in various Tempo changes that the click will follow and my Audio Regions, as long as they are set to conform or follow, as well as Acid or Rex files. So, if I want to change, based on some of these other curves that we saw that didn't work before like Parabolic, now I can go in and draw in a nice Parabolic Curve. I'm drawing a squirrelly line and watch what happens, so I get a Parabolic Curve and I can change what the point is of that, so we get a few different options there for what we're moving. So, if I drag this up a little bit more and change how my Curve is, what the Steepness is of my Curve, and let me go to S-Curve, and then I come up here and draw in from 100 to 200 I get a little bit more points that I can actually change my location from. Let me undo that, and I'm going to go to my Grabber Tool and I can change where these actually start or happen at. So, this is essentially what I can do with my Pencil Tool. If I go down to my MIDI Information then what I can do down here, so you can see this Region here, select this and show my new MIDI Editor in Pro Tools 8, and I can take my individual MIDI Notes Ð close that up Ð I can take my individual MIDI Notes and start editing down in our MIDI Editor. So, I'm going to go to our Regions View here, make a selection of the Region and I want to point out that with all of these Tools you can see down in the Tools down at the bottom that I have similar tools that I had up top. These are independent from each other, so if I wanted to go in and start penciling things in down here, that I'd want to select that Pencil Tool. So, by the Pencil Tool up top, let me go and choose what I want to actually pencil in, I went into Nodes View and now I'm penciling essentially notes that would play back or trigger whatever I've got assigned. So, these are independent from each other. If I want to focus and change where, when I select my F7 and F8 keys, what is in focus, I can do that by clicking on the actual Tool, or if I want to do that by Key Command, I can hold down Command and Option, or Control and Alt on Windows, and then hitting my 4 and 5, and you can see this really faint yellow line that indicates what's in focus, so I'm just hitting my Alpha 4 and 5, and now when I hit F7 you can see my top changes, Grabber Command Option 5 and then I'm going to toggle between my Tools. So, they have similar functions but they are independent from each other, so I can switch from one Editor to the next, which is really helpful.
