New Session / Session Folder

Subtitles of the Movie

Session Folder. Let's take a look in a little bit more detail at our Session Folder so again I'm going to Command-click up at the top of the name here, and go back a Folder so we can see my Desktop. This is the full path of where this is saved on a Macintosh. On a Windows system you're going to go into Windows Explorer and see where this is saved. So, once I've got my Session let's take a look at what these Folders are. And this is one of those things that I don't want to put the cart before the horse in discussing this, but we'll cover some of the details of what these Folders are in later movies, but let's actually just do a quick overview of what's actually created here. So, I discussed previously the Wave Cache and this is actually all the Waveforms that get drawn in our session, so if I want to create a brand new session in Pro Tools and start recording audio, or have audio files on a track, let me go ahead and do that, and go ahead and watch the movies on Creating Tracks, but I'm going to create a few new tracks here and I'm going to make them Stereo Audio Track, so I'm going to have some Waveforms to work with, and then Audio Files to actually work with. So, I'm going to go into a Folder and drag in some Audio Files. And so now I've actually got some Audio Files to work with. So, the Audio that gets imported here, so if you want to go to a new track, has Waveforms associated with it, so you can see actually what the Waveforms look like here in this particular file. And this gets stored in the Waveform Cache that we saw before, so let's take a look at that one more time. Command-click, New Session, and this Waveform Cache gets larger as I start getting more and more audio files, so as I record it draws an overview. And when your sessions get rather large I can take some time to actually draw that overview because that's a look at the file, so it just saves some time by looking at this Waveform Cache. This is something that can be deleted. It's not crucial that it goes with your Session. We look in our Audio Files folder now. We've got that file that I just imported and is now part of this Session so, that would be important for the Session to have because otherwise it wouldn't play back if I deleted my Audio Files Folder. So, this New Session is the most important thing, and the Audio Files, as far as being able to play back audio. A New Session is what actually references all these Audio Files. So, unlike a Word Document, or an Excel Spreadsheet, as you start importing audio clips, or if you start putting in videos and things into a document, if you've ever done that in PowerPoint, everything's usually self-contained within the actual file itself, so the document gets larger as you start importing more and more pictures and things. So, our Session in this case is actually just referencing all these Audio Files in other Folders, so it's important not to just grab this and think that you've got everything. And I would imagine that over the past decade or so that probably billions of dollars have been lost Ð I know that's a drastic number, but I'm basing it on what I've seen as far as time in studios and people bringing in sessions that they've worked on in their LE Rigs to HD Rigs, and not having the things they've needed, so it's been kind of a hinderment; I've definitely seen many times people traveling and they've not had the things that they've needed and they've been stuck with not having the information because they just dragged this PTF or PTS file in the past. So, go ahead and make sure you drag the entire Folder. So, you want to go back one level and grab everything here. You can still get into trouble, and I'll discuss this in another movie about everything not actually being in this folder itself, so you can actually have Media referenced anywhere on your drives by this Pro Tools file. So, it may work on your system, but it doesn't work on another. So, it's always a good practice, especially if it's crucial for a Session to make sure that you've got everything that makes this Session open by checking on another computer. So, open it up on another computer, make sure that it works, that you don't get any things that say: Offline Media. So, if I actually deleted these files, and I'm doing this from the Finder on Windows; you can do it from Explorer, and I tried to open the Session up again, so I'm going to Save it, close out of this Session, and then open the Session back up again. It's going to look for those files, and hey, there are two audio files that are missing, so what are we going to do? Well, I threw this in the trash. It sees where they should be, but it doesn't actually have the files themselves, so that's entitled Offline, so that's important to make sure that you grab everything. Regions, Groups, we'll discuss in another movie, which is actually being able to group several audio files, MIDI files, together which are called Regions when we drag these out into our Session, so this is a Region, which I can Group this together when I start having more Regions, to actually have them move as a whole. And when we import Video files, those can also be referenced as well on other drives. But if we want to have them all self-contained and they can exist within the Folder. Session File Backups are very helpful Ð that's just the brains again, so as we start automating, soloing, all of these things can be backed up for us where we're at. So, if I do a lot of edits Ð there's a lot of work that's involved in editing those files, even though the files themselves don't change, my edits do change, so I may want to have some backups of that. And then Fade Files is actually being able to create Fade-ins and Fade-outs. We want our audio to Ramp Up and Ramp Down, there's a new Audio file that's created on the Desktop, or in the Session Fade Folders.
