Navigating / Window Configurations

Windows Configurations. What Windows Configurations does for us is allows us to save our Windows in any order that we want. This is something that I'd longed for, for quite some time. We got in Pro Tools 7 and let's see how we set these up. So, by going up to Windows and choosing Configurations, if I choose the Windows Configuration List I can go in and choose to save this as a Default Configuration. So, I'm going to go to this little drop-down and choose New Configuration, and I'm going to name this Mix/Edit. So, now I've got my Mix Window on top, my Edit Window on bottom. Let's say I want a different configuration than this, I can rearrange these. There is also a new Option in Pro Tools 8 to actually arrange these, so if I want to tile all these horizontally and change the behavior of how these are stacked, fill up my screen if they're not maximized. So, I'm going to save this as my New Configuration, and I'm going to do this, this time instead by hitting period and then 2, and then the Plus key on the number pad. So, that's the same thing as going in and choosing New Configuration, except I was also able to assign the number of my configuration, which was 2 in this case. So, this time I'm going to say: Edit/Mix. And now I want to recall the first one so I can simply do that by clicking on it, going back to my previous configuration, or clicking on the second one, or I can hit period 1 and then the asterisk key on the number pad. So, period-2-asterisk key jumps me between those two different configurations. So, that's a quick way to be able to assign a number as well as to jump between my configurations. So, if I wanted to assign a different configuration, let's say I wanted to adjust my Track Heights and I wanted to have some Plug-ins open on this, so I'm going to go and Create a Plug-in real quick, and I want to have this over in this top corner, and I can have multiple Plug-ins in whatever order I want. This time I'm going to say: period and 89 then Plus, so you can see that the number now assigned with this Window's configuration is 89, so I'm going to say this is EQ, Edit Mix, whatever makes sense to you, and I can give it comments down at the bottom, and then I'm going to save that. So now I've got my configuration. I'm going to jump to period-1-asterisk, and then period-89-asterisk, and I've got my settings that I had before, so, you can see what happens as far the order; where things were located or are all stored. So there's a nice option that if I've got an active playlist I may not want to have that playlist constantly go back to its old state, so I want it to constantly update as I move things around, so if I've got that open Ð so I'm going to choose Auto Update Active Configuration Ð I may want to actually have this in a different order, so I'm going to have this side-by-side each other instead. We won't be precise, so you get the idea, and now when I jump back to this it's going to keep my previous state. So, jump back to my previous one and that is because I had this option here under Configurations to Auto Update Active Configuration. So if you don't want them changing on you, you want them to stay the way that you last left them, make sure that is off.
