Navigating / Memory Locations pt. 1

Subtitles of the Movie

Memory Locations. This is a feature that I'm fond of in Pro Tools. I particularly care for how they add and use Memory Locations. So the way that we pull up our Memory Locations Window is by Command-Pad-5 on a Mac, or a Control-Pad-5, and we can be able to create these on the fly with the Preference, so I'm going to go ahead and hit Play, and hit Enter. So, you see all of these are named for me, so I've got markers that were made for me and I can jump to any one of these locations by just clicking on them. You can see what I just created. So, let's say that I'm moving along and actually don't want to create these on the fly. If I go to this drop-down I can actually choose to not make these on the fly. So, don't Auto Name Memory Locations. What that does is now when I hit Play, Enter I get a Window that pops up so I can rename that if I wanted to. So, I didn't particularly like the default name of Marker 1, 2, 3 because I may start back at a different location and you can see these get out of order for me, and I can change the Sort Order as well. So, this Preference that I just changed, Auto Name Memory Locations, is the exact same thing as going into Preferences and then Auto Name Memory Locations from playing back. So, if I turn this on you'll see that when I come down here it's checked again, so Auto Memory Locations is checked. So, what do I want it to go to, do I want to default to a Marker, so I hit Play, Enter, and if I want to change these I can Control-click on the Markers themselves and give them a different name, so Guitar Start, and I can change what the number is here as well, so we have up to 999 of these, so I want that to actually be 200, for whatever reason. So, I've got a place to jump to; that's handy. I can type in period, 5 period, it will jump me to that Marker, or period 200 period, it jumps me to this particular Marker, but let's say that actually I'm not really concerned about jumping to a location. I'm really concerned about making Edit Selections, so I'm going to say that's a spot that I want to edit, hit Enter, and rather than choosing Marker I'm going to choose Selection, and we'll say this is a drum loop that we're editing, so I want to be able to jump back to that, I'll make another one down at the guitar, hold down Shift and Tab, and I'm going to say Guitar Loop, and you want to make sure that it actually is selected as a Selection, so my Default is no longer Marker, and then I'm going to go ahead and choose OK. So, now I can choose between both of these. I want to jump between those two selections and at any point I could grab those, edit those, cut those, move those to another location if I was going to use those later. Keep in mind that, again, our Edit Timeline Selection needs to be separated, so we want to make sure that these are not separated when we do this, otherwise if it is separated then as I make these selections and I try to jump to those, then we get this behavior. So, you can see my Playhead is updating, but my Selection stays the same. So, if I have these linked then both my Playhead goes together. So, it needs to be Unselected if you do want to keep your location; it needs to be Selected if you want to jump to that as your Playback. So, those are part of your Selection Behaviors when that's on or off, so make sure that you're aware of those settings as we discussed in another movie. There are a lot of other settings that you can see in here: General Properties, and we'll discuss this in another movie, actually how to set these and choose what we're actually viewing when we make these settings, or these Memory Locations.
