Navigating / Link Timeline & Edit Selection
Subtitles of the Movie
Link Timeline and Edit Selection. There's a button that we can choose to turn on our Link Timeline and Edit Selection; you can see it toggling up at the top. This is one of those things that I've received several phone calls on. I had one guy hunt me down for a couple hours trying to figure out how to turn this Preference off. And what this does is it allows us to be able to have an Edit Selection separate from what actually plays back, and typically people would probably want that on for the most part, so as I make a selection what will happen is, it'll play from wherever I select, so essentially my Edit Selection and my Timeline, which is the Playback, are always linked together, so if I make a selection here, those will play within that selection. But let's say that I don't want that behavior. I turn this off and the Key Command for this is Shift-/with Mac and Windows, and I go and I make a selection over here. You can see now that my two arrows here, my Inpoint and my Outpoint, is separate from what I've got up here, which is my Edit Selection. So, I could go and quickly listen to another location if I wanted to, separate from where I actually play from. So if I hit Spacebar it's going to play from the blue; but if I hit Control-back it's going to play it from my Edit Selection, so I could quickly grab something, say, yeah, this is my perfect 2-bar loop where I could go into Grid Mode if I wanted to and set it to Bars and I could grab a perfect selection and then move it to another location if I wanted to. So, I'm going to separate that and copy it, and I want this to actually move to another location for me, so move this over to here. So, I'm separate from my Playhead when I actually make those selections, otherwise those would always move together, so when I actually select a Region you can see that my Playback location is also updating. So, I may not always want that behavior, and this can make editing pretty slick and quick if I'm trying to actually always play back from a certain location but Edit in a different location, especially when you're doing post-production, things for film that I find particularly useful. So again, the Key Command is Shift-/and you have a visual indicator that shows you this. So, leave that on, probably for the most part. If you ever have this off just know that you can always actually make a Playback Selection up at the top, whether that's on or off so you can see as I make this selection up here that's always going to be able to set my Playback location whether or not that's on. So again, I make a Selection, have a separate Edit Selection. When that's on it does the same. It just links the Edit Selection when I make that.
