Navigating / Tabbing & Locating
Subtitles of the Movie
Tabbing and Locating. There are numerous ways to get around in Pro Tools. We can make selections and playbacks, as long as we have our Link Timeline in the Edit Selection. It always jumps to where we're at. I can also jump to a different location by hitting Return, it brings me back to the beginning of my Session, or again, Option-Return takes me to the end of my Session. If I'm working with Bars and Beats I can change my Main Ruler to Bars and Beats and then go up and just type what Bar I want to jump to, so if I want to go to Bar 20, Enter, and then Playback from Bar 20. If I'm in Minutes and Seconds, then now when I enter that, just like the name implies, Minutes and Seconds will now jump me to 1 minute by typing in 1, and Playback. I can also hit the Extended Number Pad Asterisks and it jumps me right into that field and I can press 2 minutes, hit the over arrow key, and let's say 3 seconds, Enter. Now, I'm at 2 minutes and 3 seconds. By Tabbing you can jump to various Regions, so let's say I've got a whole bunch of different Regions in my Session and I want to jump from Region to Region. If I hit my Tab key that will jump me from Region to Region as long as this button is off. So, I'm jumping from Region to Region, holding down Option, goes the opposite direction, so I can go back the other direction, and I've got a Key Command on here that's actually overriding this, and that's actually something I want to point out to be careful of. When you have multiple Key Commands assigned, any time that something is at the system level it will override what Pro Tools is set to, so here's a Key Command that should normally go backwards, but instead it's invoking a Key Command that is at the system level, and that's both Mac and Windows. So, I want to actually Tab by Transient. There is a function to be able to go to my individual hits, so let's say I'm working with drums and I want to go from drum hit to drum hit. Let me zoom in on this. And when I have Tabbed Transient on, now instead of jumping from Region to Region it's going from Transient to Transient, which is really nice. So, based on what my selection is, take off a group and just work with the drums up here. You can see it jumping to each one of those hit locations. So, that's really nice for being able to separate and work with our Regions to quickly edit. There is also an Edit Function to be able to edit based on your Selection on Transient, so there are a lot of ways to work with your Tab to Transients, holding down Option and then Tabbing would do the same thing if you didn't have a system level Key Command on. And if you want to make selections in both of these Modes, if I hold down Shift as well as Tab then I can make selections of what I want to work with. So, let's say I want to just delete that section, or I want to make a loop out of something I can hold down Shift and then I can get a nice, good loop, and edit my loop by separating, and I'm just pressing Command-E on Mac, or Control-E on Windows. So, that is getting around our Interface with using our Locator. Several different ways to do it, but those are a few of them.
