Navigating / Transport

Subtitles of the Movie

Transport. Our Transport allows us to be able to see basically our Play, Start, Stop, Forward functions as well as a few other things, so we get to our Transport by going to the Windows Menu and then clicking on Transport. The Default Key Command is Command-Pad-1 and we can see that by the circle here indicating that we're doing the number pad that's our extended keyboard. On the Windows system that's Control-1. So, getting around with our Transport, most of these functions here we can do through Key Commands, but we can also be able to have a nice visual with the Transport Op. So, if I hit Spacebar, that's going to be my Play as well as Stop. So, that was just the Spacebar. This takes me back to the beginning of the Session, this takes me to the end of the Session Ð I can do that by hitting Return, so if I'm at the end of a Session or anywhere in the Session if I hit Return then that brings me back to the beginning of my Session, so that is the Return, next to our Quotations. If I hit Option-Return, that takes me to the end, so that would be by clicking on this button here. We have our Rewind and Forward, that's Pad-1 to Rewind and Pad-2 to Forward. And then to go into Record, there are numerous ways to do that. I can do that by Command-Spacebar, I can do that by Pad-3 if I'm set up in Transport Mode and I can also hit F12 to go into Record, so that's only on Tracks that are Armed, so. That's a really basic function as far as what our Transport Controls are of Start-Stop. We get a lot of other information from our Transport and we can choose what we want to see, so I can go into a minimalistic view if I wanted to in the Transport. So, if I go up to my Views I can choose what I want to see in my Transport. I can shrink this down, down to a pretty minimalistic view. So, let's go back to what we had before, so I want to choose Expand the Transport. I'm going to click on this little drop-down and I want to see everything, and now in Pro Tools 8 we have the ability to see and generate Empty C button here, which that was always in a peripheral setting to generate Empty C, so it's kind of nice. In HD systems we also have the option to generate LTC and that is with a Sync Box that we have connected, so you won't see that on an LE system. So, the rest of these settings, our Pre-Roll, Post-Roll, when we're Tracking this gives us the ability to see a recording before we actually go into record we want to have a little bit of playback before that, so I can see my Pre-Roll is 8 seconds and I'm adjusting what my Pre-Roll is here by going to the Selection Tool and just holding down the Option key. I can also drag and change that. So, that's a nice indicator there. If I hold down the Command and K I can turn on Pre-Roll and Post-Roll, so, Command-K, or Control-K on Windows, and my Start and Stop, where I actually punch in and out from is shown here. So, this is based on having my Edit Selection linked. So if I turn that off then I have a different Edit from where my Playback is. So you can see as I'm adjusting this here I'm actually not going to start playing back from that location. So, that is when they're linked, that's what they're indicating. Going on to our Extended Transport, this allows us to receive MIDI information when I want to go in to Record. If I'm recording MIDI I don't want to start recording until it receives a MIDI note. My Metronome for Count-off and then to Merge MIDI together, we'll discuss that in another movie, and Conductor as well, to allow us to change Tempo. So, that's a really quick overview of just our Transport. We also have our Transport up at the top that we can adjust in our Toolbar, as far as where it is by Command-dragging and moving things around. So, that is our Transport, and some of the functions of it.
