Meta Tags have been around in web development for almost as long as there's been web development, way back in the very early days of HTML we knew it was important to put Meta Tags in our HTML code and so for those of you who have been asleep for 20 years or you've just never really dug into this, let's talk about first of all what exactly are Meta Tags. Well Meta Tags are keywords that we're going to put into our HTML content usually a list that's in the head section of your HTML document that Search Engines used to use almost predominantly to determine exactly what kind of content was included in that page and it helped the, the Search Engines you know record that this page is useful for certain content and so forth. Now these things helped but in the world of Google and the other Search Engines now, it's, it doesn't have the same weight that it once had but it's still there. And all the Major Search Engines still use these keywords that are out there in Meta Tags just to different varying levels of importance. But ASP.NET 4's doing something really neat here, they're adding two new Page Object Properties that allow you to do some really sharp things with Meta Tags and these two Object Properties on the Page Object are Page.MetaKeywords and Page.MetaDescription. Now both of these are used in the Code Behind file and we can do some really interesting things with them because not only do we put them in the Code Behind file but we can also just put them in the Page Directive on every individual page. Now what's the big deal here? This gives you the ability to programmatically to customize your Meta Tag on that page once that page has been created by the web server based on whatever customization code you've written. Think about this, if a user requests certain parts, certain situations, certain things from a database, we can also from that same database, pull Meta Tags that we then programmatically place into our Meta Tags and the Search Engines can use this for those pages. Now there's a lot of different ways to go about this, don't want to get in all that but the big deal is, we can now programmatically set our Meta Tags on our pages. Just wanted you to know about this, this is something again in ASP.NET 4, Microsoft's going to be very proud of it and the whole Search Engine organization world continues to expand, continues to grow in importance. You can spend quite a bit of money hiring Search Engine Optimization Consultants, experts and so forth. So anyway you can do from a development side to help and assist with good Search Engine Optimization is great for your websites, especially if you're trying to attract public attention and direct traffic to your site. So anyway, keep this in mind, two new properties on the Page Object let's us manipulate our Meta Tags programmatically.
