One thing that is for certain is that the world of technology is ever changing. One of the most difficult aspects for us is that we have to be constantly learning. Continuous education is a must for any technological field. In the case of databases, we also must be aware of other services that are available. One such service is ADO.NET. ADO.NET is a data-access technology that enables applications to connect to data stores. It allows for the manipulation of the data in various ways. It's based on the .NET Framework. It's really been designed so that it can be used from all programming languages that target the NET Framework. These include Visual Basic, Visual C plus et cetera The concept here is that it consists of a set of classes that are used to handle data access based primarily on XML. It is one of our newer services that is available. It's really a set of components that can be used by programmers to access data. It's commonly used by these programmers to access and modify data stored primarily within relational database systems. However it can be used, of course, in a non-relational manner. It's also sometimes considered an evolution of the ActiveX Data Object. All the data in ADO.NET is transported in an XML format. It is a structured text document that can be read on any platform. It really promotes the use of disconnected datasets by allowing for automatic connection pooling. Because it is mainly about disconnected datasets, the database server no longer becomes a bottleneck. We are going to shift the resources away from the server. As a result our performance is enhanced. The Data Services Framework consists of a combination of patterns and libraries. These enable the creation of the data services for the web. The goal of the Data Services Framework is to facilitate the creation of flexible data services. These, of course, are naturally integrated with the web. The web, of course, is one of the main sources for our databases these days. The dataset is, of course, disconnected, an in-memory representation of the data itself. So as a result we have just released the server from the burden. It can be considered a local copy of the relevant portions of your database. We can eliminate the need to connect to everything and just isolate the data that must be available. The data of course then can be loaded from any valid data storage place. The Provider is who is responsible for providing and maintaining the connection to the database. This Provider, again, does not have to be your server. Keep in mind that the ADO.NET is a set of related components that work together to provide data in an efficient and in a performance driven manner. It allows us connections to any source that we need and is one of the commonly used services when working with the web.
