Using Incognito DNS commander is fairly straightforward. Start the Incognito Management Console by clicking: start>all programs> Incognito utilities>Incognito Management Console>IMC. Click the plus symbol to expand the DNS Commander object, and again to expand the server object. You can start by adding a primary zone. Expanding the primary domains object in the left pane shows a list of all the domains configured on the server. When you click primary domains, the primary domain management page opens in the right pane to the add primary domain tab. Enter a domain name and description in the appropriate boxes. You can create a primary domain from a template or using the wizard; select the global template from the list, and click add. Your domain is added to the server with no further intervention; click the domain in the left pane. As you can see, the default NS and MX records have been added; click primary domains again, and enter another domain name and description. Select a "create domain from wizard" option, and click add; the add primary domain wizard first allows you to configure the SOA record information for the domain. Make any changes you need and click next; this step allows you to add NS records to the domain. A local server is added by default, and you can add the other servers by clicking the add button, entering the name servers host name, and clicking ok; click next. Next step allows you to add MX records to your new domain. To add a MX record, click add, enter a preference value and host name for the mail server, and click ok; click next. This step allows you to add C name records to your domain. To add a C name record click add, enter the alias name and canonical name, which is the target host name, and click ok; click next again. You can now add host records to your domain. To add a host record click add, specify a host name and IP address and click ok, click next. You can now review the records being created in new zone; click finish to add your new zone. Click the zone in the left pane and you can see the records added through the wizard. Creating a secondary domain is simpler; click secondary domains in left pane. The secondary domain management page opens in the right pane to the configuration tab. To add a secondary domain, first specify the domain name in the domain box. Now click the add button, and specify the IP address of the master server from which the zone will be transferred, and click ok. If you have more than one master server, click add again to add another address. Once you've added all the addresses of your master servers, click add secondary domain; the server attempts a zone transfer. If the zone transfer is successful the domain is added; if the zone transfer fails, the zone will not be added. To create a record in a domain, select the primary domain from the list, in the primary domains in the left pane. The "view resource records" tab opens by default in the right pane; click the add button to add a new record. Specify a name and optionally a description. Select the record type from the drop-down box, the class should be left at the default of IN in most cases. Set the record TTL value, if you want to use a value other than the default. The data box at the bottom of the dialog varies depending on the record type; enter the required data and click ok to add the record. You'll now see a record in the view resource records tab of the domain. DNS commander has a few other features that are useful for large environments. If you have a very large number of domains for example, it may be time consuming to find the one you want to edit, by expanding the primary domains object in the left pane of the console. Instead click "search primary domains" in the left pane. You can also search secondary domains by selecting "search secondary domains" in the left pane. Enter all or part of the name of the domain to locate and click search; the results are shown below. You can double click a domain in the results box to edit it; you can search for more than just a name though. By selecting with the "with the drop down box", you can search by other criteria. By clicking the advanced search tab, you can search by multiple criteria, by clicking the add search criteria button. The search function has another useful feature, click the replace tab; once you have a list of search results, you can click add/replace item, select an item to replace from the drop-down box and enter the new value. If you click the replace button, the selected domain and the search results will have this value replaced. By clicking replace all, all of the domains in the search results will have this value replaced. DNS commander has a number of other useful features that we can't cover in detail. The DNS audits object in the left pane, allows you to audit administrative actions such as adding and editing domains, or audit zone and record lookups. The statistics object is used to view statistics about your system. The service configuration object allows you to configure global settings on your server.
