There are two ways to add a sub-domain on a windows DNS server, as a locally hosted sub domain, or as a delegate hosted on another system. A sub domain is simply a domain such as west.domain.tld that resides below a parent domain, in this case domain.tld. A locally hosted sub domain looks like any other zone, but it resides beneath a parent zone. To add a sub domain, locate and select the parent zone domain under which you want to add the sub domain. Any existing sub domains will be shown below the parent zone in the tree in the left pane. Right click the zone under which to add the sub domain, and select new domain. Enter the name for the sub domain, but don't include the full domain name; click ok to add the sub domain. You can now add records to your sub domain just like any other zone. The second way to add a sub domain is as a delegate; a delegate is used when the sub domain is hosted on another DNS server. This is useful if you want someone else to be in charge of a sub domain, but don't want to give him access to your DNS servers. Before you add a delegate, you should ensure that the zone is in place on the servers where it will reside. These will be the authoritative DNS servers for the zone. For example, if your DNS server is the authoritative for test.tld, and you want east.test.tld to be located on other DNS servers, add the zone east.test.tld to the other servers first. At this point east.test.tld cannot be resolved from the Internet, as only test.tld is registered with authoritative name servers. Any request for east.domain.tld will be sent to the server authoritative for test.tld. This will work fine, if east.test.tld was a sub domain, but is hosted on other DNS servers. Right click the parent zone, in which to add the delegate, and select new delegation. Click next, then enter the child domain name and click next again. Click the add button, to add a name server record for the delegated zone. Enter the fully qualified name for the DNS server, and either click resolve, or enter an IP address and click the add button. You can add multiple IP addresses for a DNS server but typically won’t need to. Click ok to add the record; repeat this process for each name server hosting the delegated domain, then click next. Click finish, and the delegation will be added; only NS records are added for this domain. The remaining records are hosted on the remote name servers.
