In our last movie, we talked about the need for verification. We addressed the errors that happen within our databases, when we're transferring over data. Now of course, as mentioned, this is typically a job for a database itself, but I would like you to be aware of Crystal's role in this verification. I am going to go to the File Menu, and under File I'm going to go to Options. In Options, we have a number of the different setups that we can do in Crystal. Here for instance, I can turn on my Tool Tips, decide whether or not I want to show Rulers, well I'm going to go over to the Database Tab itself. Now in the Database Tab, I'd like you to look at the bottom of the dialog box. Here you will notice about half way down, we have the ability to see, if our data is being verified. Notice that we verify on first refresh. We can verify our stored procedures, which are really views and queries, that are running off our server, and we can verify when the database driver is upgraded. Now verification is a good thing, but remember the trade off is going to be time. Verification is going to take some time. If I go to the Tab that says Dependency Checker, you are going to notice here, that again, there going to be different forms of verification. It's going to compile formulas, compile expressions, compile functions. When we are compiling formulas, expressions, and functions, we're looking at each of those individual items, to see if there are any errors within them. These are your high risk areas. We'll also validate hyperlinks, and once again, verify the database itself. Crystal Reports understands the significance of working with that verification. As a result, within the options, it automatically turns on the Report Checking Options. You can turn these off if you would like to, however, remember that this is an important part of error checking. The Database Tab again also does verification. Here it's going to do verification on the data, as it's refreshed. Now when you're working with Crystal and your databases, and you're working with verification, you will also hear people refer to passes. Passes refers to the number of times that I'm going to read through the data for error selection. The reason we read through it a number of times, is on occasion when you're looking for the error, and you select it, you could accidentally skip over the next error. As a result, our programs will do a number of Passes to ensure that your database is correct. Now there's nothing you need to actually do with this verification, but it's important to be aware of it. Remember, if you go to your File Menu, and to Options, you'll see verification information under both Database, and under the Dependency Checker. Do some research, be comfortable with the term verification, and ensure that you're doing everything possible on your system, to avoid these errors, and as always, always, always to have a backup.
