Before You Start Drawing / Establishing Settings
Subtitles of the Movie
When working on a book like this that's going to be taking place in a city, establishing the settings is very, very important and luckily for me I have a good friend who had already done a book that was very, very heavy on cities and so he had already developed a bunch of SketchUp models that he had either gotten from the Warehouse or built himself and arranged them into a couple city blocks that could be used for laying out pages and he was generous enough to donate those to me so that I could use them for this project, thereby saving me a considerable amount of work. His name is Rob Richardson and not only did he help me with the backgrounds but he also helped me with giving me critiques and feedback throughout the entire process, seeing as how he is also a penciler, an inker, a colorist, a letterer, as well as being a writer. He has done many different things and we've worked together on several projects. So, Rob is a great guy and he was really, really super cool for giving us this that we can use for this book. Now, that said, this is a lot of work. This is a ton of work that you see here. And the whole idea of using something like SketchUp is that we can begin to do things that we couldn't do with photo reference which is to scroll around, to zoom in and zoom out, so let's go ahead and zoom in, you can see here when we're dealing with this much information it gets a little bit jumpy and we can pan. So, if you're not familiar with SketchUp that's like the really, really stripped down tour of why SketchUp is so cool. This would make a great city panel where, you know, you have someone like Spiderman swinging down the middle of the block or something. I mean, you can go as crazy with this as you want. It really is not that big of a deal but what Rob did with this is a great way to highlight the wonderful thing about working in 3D and that is once you've done this, unlike drawing this panel once and you could never really reuse it again, this can be reused over and over and over again from thousands and thousands of different camera angles to achieve different results each and every time. So, we could do an overhead shot, we could do a shot like this, we could do a shot like that, we could come all the way around and do maybe something from this angle. So you can see here we have a huge amount of variety that we can get out of this one model. The work that you put into these is well worth the time spent. It really becomes an asset that you can carry with you for your entire career. And, of course, you can always modify it. As a matter of fact, Rob did modify this for me for this particular project so that it would be better suited toward the goals that we had in mind for this particular book versus the previous book that he had done. So, this is not something that you have to use - SketchUp - I mean if you're really, really a diehard person who says, you know, I want to draw my own backgrounds, I want to do my own perspective or whatever, you know, there are tools and there are certainly perspective grid tools in programs like Illustrator and Painter and Photoshop that will aid in that and if you have your old fashioned perspective grids or whatever you are more than welcome to use those. I personally don't see the point. I mean I look at this and I think to myself, man, not only does this look good, not only is it incredibly accurate, but then on top of that I get to keep it forever and I get to reuse it. So, SketchUp really, really the bomb. Highly recommend that you watch my training series before you proceed any further in this training because the SketchUp training that I give you will explain how you can begin to do these types of models.
