Introduction / New in Painter 9

Subtitles of the Movie

Let's talk about what's new in Painter 9. Well Painter 9 first of all is noticeably much more responsive and faster than previous versions. You have to remember that a lot of math goes into programming a computer to simulate painting with natural media. In Painter 9 the brushes are greatly improved in their responsiveness which lets you worry about creating great art instead of waiting for the brushes to catch up to you. This will of course vary on the speed and power of your computer, so as I always say if you can grab more RAM for your system by all means do so. We're looking at the suite welcome screen here, as you see it offers tutorials, tips, tricks, artist profiles and inspiration as well as the ability to create a new document from the welcome screen. Open up a recently opened document so you can resume work on it or work with a template. You can also find out what's new in the application. If you like to save versions of your documents as you work, if you look under the file menu and, don't worry I'll go over this stuff a little later on, you'll see something called iterative save and I'll just show you real fast it's blanked out right now because I don't have a document open but right here will allow you to save automatically your documents in versions for example zero, zero one; zero, zero two; zero, zero three and so on. It's a great way to have back ups as you work on new experimentations in your documents. There is a palette called the tracker palette which we'll look at later that keeps a record of the brushes you've used on a painting. It's very nice, you can also save those. You can also rotate the canvas in Painter 9. I tend to draw at very extreme angles so this makes it easy for me to mimic how I work in real life. Another cool thing are the artist oils which simulate how brushes dry out as you paint and the way they interact with colors on a canvas. You can also choose the colors from the mixer palette. Now similar to the degree of customization found in Photoshop you can really go ballistic in how you customize the keyboard shortcuts and we'll spend more time on that feature as well. Speaking of Photoshop, Painter is also its best buddy now; files can be interchanged in between the two applications with all layers intact. We'll talk more about that later on as well, and last but not least we're gonna talk about digital watercolor. Now digital watercolor let's you paint with paint that stays wet when you reopen the document which is great when you need to take a break and wish to resume your work at a later time. You can use the slider to change the wet fringe on the brush strokes to achieve even cooler effects. So we're gonna touch upon these and other new features in Painter 9 as we proceed and get into the application.
