Drawing Tools / Using a Digital Tablet

Subtitles of the Movie

Often times people ask me why use a digital tablet instead of a mouse? Well, because I like to paint and create artwork in the computer as if though I were working on paper or canvas. The feel that you get from a digital tablet and a stylus which is the other word for that pen is more natural, it's more intuitive, and it reflects the way you probably started to draw when you were little. The chances are very slim you started to draw with a regular mouse. Another advantage to using a stylus is because you can simulate thin and thick strokes simply by the pressure you apply on the tablet. For example, I have an oil brush with a tapered round variant selected and I'm going to very lightly start to paint a stroke on the canvas here. And I'm going to increasingly add more pressure to the pad. So, it's very light, very light. I'm going to push down a little harder. I'm going to pushdown a little harder, and look at this I'm going to go a little softer again as I draw. And I can really get very nice line or mark by simply varying how hard I push the pen down. Another great thing about the tablet is that if you flip it upside down it has an eraser on the other end so you can simply erase what you don't want or create any kind of effect you want like this by erasing just the portions that you want to. I don't have to choose another tool to do that. I don't have to choose another paint color. I don't have to select with the marquee tools or anything. I simply flip the pen around and I can erase. Now instead of me just talking about it, let me go to the Wacom website, and no I don't work for Wacom but this is the tablet that I've used for a long, long time. And I have tried some of the other ones and I'm not going to mention any of the names. I just didn't feel the quality or the software was good at all, just that is my opinion. But let's take a look at what we have here. This is wacom.com, sometimes it's called Wacom depending on who you are and how you talk and I say Wacom. Who knows how you say it. I have zero idea. I should actually call them and see how they answer the phone. Wacom, Wacom, okay. For those of you who want to just get in to the digital tablet arena and not spend a billion dollars you can drop 99 dollars down and get the graph fire. This is phenomenal this is great for portability. Throw it in your backpack and go. As you see here it comes with a mouse and this mouse is wireless and it works because it interacts with the tablet itself. So when you move the mouse the tablet it actually works n your screen. It does not work over here. You have to put into the tablet. This guy is the pen I was talking about. This is the stylus. And look right here, this is the eraser that I was talking about. So you paint and draw and sketch with this side and you flip it upside down to erase with this side. If you want to spend a little bit more money and get a bigger pad, then come on down to the intervals which is what I have here. And it starts at 219. And I think I have the six by eleven. They get much larger but I think this is the one I have. And it has a little bit more pressure sensitivity as far as how reactive the pen feels when you're drawing on it and how much resolution you get, so its really, really accurate. It also comes with a mouse and it has these little buttons on the side here so you can program those. You can also get really down and dirty if you have a lot of money and get the Cintec and you draw on the monitor itself. So you can tilt it. You can put it in your lap and you can draw right on this screen, which is awesome. I don't have those kind of bucks yet, but maybe one day I'll get this thing. So, these are the options you have when it comes to drawing in Painter with a real feeling of a brush on canvas or paper. So check out Wacom.com or just do a search for digital tablets or visit your friendly computer store. Maybe the Apple store or Comp USA or something like that and see what they have. There's all kinds of price ranges available and I'm sure you will be able to find one that will suit your way of working as well as your budget.
