If you like to work with Adobe Illustrator to create your Path or Vector artwork or if you're working in conjunction with another artist and you're going to do the Painter Effects of their Illustrator artwork, never fear you have the ability to go to the File Menu and you can go to Acquire Adobe Illustrator File. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to go over to Adobe Illustrator which is already open, just like on those cooking shows, I have it ready and I'm going to create a Vector Path. So check it out, Pen Tool, White Arrow, just like in Painter, so its kind of cool that you can learn Painter and then feel comfortable in Illustrator and even in Photoshop, a lot of the tools are the same, although they have different names and when I click on the Pen Tool look whose lives here. The Add Anchor Point, Delete and the Convert. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to quickly create a Shape and I don't know what I'm doing, I'm just making like a puzzle piece and I'm just going to go ahead and keep drawing something, no idea what I'm doing, just making a puzzle piece and as you notice I also had to close those that shape the same way I did in Painter but making sure that the Path, it ends where it starts. OK, so here's my Path, you'll be surprised by the way to know that we can Edit this just as if though we were in Illustrator inside of Painter using its Tools. So with this Path what I'm going to do is I'm going to go to File and I'm going to choose Save As and on my Desktop I'll just call it Path. I'm pretty clever sometimes and. AI stands for Adobe Illustrator. So I'm going to click Save. Now here is the tricky part, now even though Painter is very compatible with Photoshop it may not be compatible with every application. So I highly suggest that you experiment here. I'm going to Save this File in two different formats, one as the latest version of the application which is Illustrator CS4 and I'm going to leave everything at the defaults even though I think this Create PDF Compatible File might come back to haunt me. But I'll click OK and then I'm going to try to open that in Painter. If it doesn't work I'll come back and save it in what's known as a Legacy Format. Legacy Formats are versions that are in the older application File Formats. For example Illustrator 3 or even Illustrator 8, that's so you can work with people who haven't really upgraded their application. OK so I'm back in Painter, I'm going to go to File, I'm going to go to Acquire Adobe Illustrator File and as I feared the Option to Import this is not available. That's because some applications have their own internal way of working and the bells and whistles that are contained in this version simply can't be opened by Painter. So what we'll do is try a different format once again known as a Legacy. I'll go to Save As and I'll this Path 2 just to change it, Save and in the version Drop-down Menu these are the Legacy Formats. So I can go backwards in time. I can try 10, 9, 8 and 3. Now 3 is definitely going to work, let's go ahead and try 8 just to see how far back I can go. I'll click OK and I'll try to open this one and then as just one last experiment and here we go, here's Path 2 is available, I'll go ahead and open it and I'll twirl it down and see if we have anything there and even though it opened I don't see anything. We're going to try one more thing. I'm going to go back to Illustrator and save it as the Legacy Version 3. Click Save, go to Illustrator 3 and say OK and then we'll try one more time, we're going to go Acquire, I'll try opening the third one and there we have it. So as you can see just because you have the latest applications, it doesn't necessarily mean they're going to work with each other. So don't be afraid to try going back in time and saving as Legacy so that you can see if you can open it and work with it. Now I'm going to grab my White Arrow, click on the End or the Edge and look at that. I can manipulate that shape as if though I had created right here in Painter.
