Painting Primer / Color Tools
Subtitles of the Movie
It can be a little difficult sometimes to find just the right color for the piece your painting. What color do you use to create a warm feeling or a cool feeling or what colors go well together? What colors oppose each other; you know all that kinds of great stuff. I want to share with you some tools that you can use to understand color and also to have it in front of you so you can see what colors go where as far as a wheel or some swatches and that kind of thing. So I'm at Wikipedia.com and I simply did a search for Color Wheel. Now I have one of these in my studio and actual Color Wheel and if you go to the art store you might want to pick one up so could just have it in front of you. You can spin it around; see which colors go with each other and that kind of thing. It's really nice when you want to paint like a nighttime scene and you want to know what colors go well to make the composition nice and cohesive. Now granted I am the ultimate rule breaker, I don't pretty much believe in staying by tried and true rules because as a creative person I also want to do what I think looks great. So I am always getting in trouble because you know I don't wear colors that quote unquote match. I just wear whatever I just happen to find, I like to do that. So the Color Wheel is a tool that you can use to find out how the colors work and as you can see it's quite extensive, the explanation and also the different tools on this Wikipedia webpage. Some other tools you might want to use are Pantone Color Guides. Now these little books here are pretty thin, but they fan open to show you all the different colors that your clients might want you to use for their colors. A good example, I did some work for Walt Disney and of course when you working with Mickey Mouse and Goofy and those guys, those colors are the tried and true standard colors for these characters, they don't change, ever. Mickey's skin is his color, Mickey's clothes are this color and they will provide you with those numbers. So when you open this up you'll be able to punch those colors into Painter or Photoshop and match them perfectly. Now granted many of these applications have these kinds of things built in now and all you really need to do is ask your client to provide you with the numbers. So if you don't want to shell out the bucks for these, because they are quite pricey you can find other ways to get that information. Color Swatches, something that you can get from carpet place or anyplace that has things that come in different colors is also a nice way to have a variation of colors that you can rely for reference. You can go online and do a search for Color Swatches or you can once again go to a carpet store, a fabric store and just ask for a Color Swatch Sample. And a resource that I find very helpful is to go into the local Home Depot and kind of like walk out with armfuls of those Color Books that all the painters have in there. So everybody has a bunch of books that talk about colors for your living room and for your kitchen and for your bedroom and then also give you some nice ideas as to how color can work in harmony with each other for different rooms and you get some really nice ideas from those or you can also go to the Baer.com website and check out their Color Tools here. As you can see there's one for exploring color, so check that out with the color smart thing. So those are some of the Color Tools at your disposal so you can explore and play around and understand color.
