Introduction / Peripheral Devices
Subtitles of the Movie
More and more traditional artists are heading to digital because, well its cleaner, there's no smell, there's no clean-up, all you have to do is turn the computer on, open up your application and turn it off. You also can save anywhere, undo, play with layers, experiment and do so much more in a digital form then you can do in real life. So what I want to do is help you guys out by pointing you towards some peripheral devices that you might want to incorporate into your digital workflow. Now I have this scanner here this is a Cano Scan LIDE 6004 and don't ask me where they get these crazy names from, no idea. But for me to create my own custom texture sometimes requires that I take a piece of paper, grab a toothbrush, put some paint on it and just flick it around, crumble it up and then scan that into my computer. So I have a nice background that I can use for a wall or starry sky or something like that. You can also go outside and get yourself some leaves and some grass and some rocks and all kinds of cool things like nails and pennies and then you know put them on the scanner or you know gently, you don't want to scratch the glass and scan those in as well. By using a scanner you can bring in a lot of materials that you can use inside of Painter to create very cool artwork. So that's why I recommend that you try getting a scanner, these don't cost really much of anything anymore. I think I paid a hundred dollars or something for this scanner. One of my other trusted devices is my Sony Cyber-shot, I love this camera, its fast and I can take pictures while something is moving. The shutter is very good and I can get some pictures even while I'm on the passenger side of a car or in the car. I don't sit on the car; although I've tried that and while the wife is driving I can take some nice pictures to bring into the application. Some of the pictures that we actually use in this tutorial I took with this camera while snapping shots on the road. So once again its about 250.00 dollars or so, good camera I highly recommend it, I love this camera haven't had any problems with it all. Alright so let's go ahead and talk about some of the input devices that you might want to use. Some people still use a mouse and I can not draw with a mouse at all. I've tried, failed miserably. So I want to bring your attention to the digital tablet realm and I want to show you different ones in different price points. One of the things that people are most afraid of is that they can't afford the technology. Well as you can see this is a Wacom Tablet and its 99.00 dollars. Wacom has come up with a brand new line called Bamboo and it's an inexpensive entry point into the digital tablet realm. If you have never seen one of these before The way it works is the pen is called a Stylus and you draw on this tablet, just like you're drawing on paper. As a matter of fact you can actually put a sketch on top of this and trace over it and it will transfer onto your screen. It also comes with a traditional regular mouse that's wireless and you simply move it along the tablet, 99.00 dollars, several different colors and this is a great entry point for you guys. This is what I use here, I use the Intuos Line although I don't have the Intuos Four, this guy just came out and I'm very sad that I don't have it. I have Intuos 3, so I'm going to cry. Still trying to hypnotize the wife, let the money loose so I can go get one. But this is a great new version of the Intuos 3, it comes in many sizes from like 9 by 12 all the way to like massive insane size so, check this out, Wacom.com by the way. Let me show you this, Wacom.Com. It also has the Cintiq line which is for you guys with the heavy pockets out there. You draw literally on the screen, so you don't use a tablet; you simple take your Stylus and draw directly onto the screen. A lot of people love this because they can paint and draw right here without having the Stylus on a tablet. So if you have the money for it and you really want to use Painter and this is what you're going to do to make money or you just happen to be a millionaire, you know by the way hook me up, send me some money, thank you very much, check out the Cintiq. So these are some peripheral devices you guys might want to check out to help enhance your digital workflow.
