Interface / Tools Palette
Subtitles of the Movie
The Tools Palette is something that you're going to use quite often in your adventures in Painter because the tools that you'll use to paint, to select, to move things around and crop all live here. Even when you want to choose different papers and nozzles, they're all here as well. So let me go ahead and just breakdown some of the things in the toolbox and don't worry we'll cover pretty much all these tools in the course of this tutorial. We may skip a tool here and there because there are so many and we want to focus on the ones that are going to help you really get the most out of Painter. Like many applications there are a whole bunch of tools and most artists typically only use about 20 to 30 percent of those tools, if even that many. I'll give you a good example. I use an application called Maya to create 3D models, there's so much functionality in Maya that I could possibly launch a space shuttle from my house and even land it. But I don't need all those tools because everyone is going to have different needs. So you might be a cartoonist or you might be a painter and you might not use certain tools that another discipline might use. So for example as a cartoonist you may not really care too much about the Divine Proportion, you just want to scribble out some cool stuff. You might want to just have a dragon flying through the air and not worry about the rules of art as they were. So don't worry if you don't master everything here, focus on the tools that you need for your particular tasks. Now of course in Painter we should very well expect to see a Brush and from here we can use the Property Bar to change how we interact with this brush. What we can do with this tool is to move things that are on layers. This is the Layer Adjustor Tool, so when we draw things on a particular layer we can then use this to move it around. I'll go ahead and create a New Layer to show you. So on this new layer I will just draw out a mark like so and I'll grab my Layer Adjustor and click and now I can move that object on that layer. When I want to select things I can use my Rectangular Selection or if I hold my mouse down and by the way whenever you see a Downward Pointing Arrow inside of one these tools, this is your indicator that there's more tools living in here. So I can hold this down and I can grab a different type of Selection Tool. I can also select with the Magic Wand Tool and I can click on objects and select them based on the pixels. Let me go ahead and press Command or Control D on my keyboard to deselect that. I can Crop things with this guy here. I can use the Pen Tool to draw out vector paths like I can in illustrator or in Photoshop. I can also draw Rectangular Shapes or an Elliptical Shape with this tool. When I want to add some text to my design I can grab the Text Tool and when I want to manipulate shapes I can choose my Shape Selection Tool. When I want to change the pixels in my image I can dodge the pixels which makes them lighter or I can burn them which makes them darker. I can choose these guys here to add a grid or to add with my Divine Proportion. I can also use the Cloner Tools or the Eraser and when I want to choose Colors in my document I can use the Dropper Tool. So I can click on this, click on the color and that tool will then put the color that I clicked on in this foreground color. Here I can use a Paint Bucket Tool to fill things quickly. I can zoom in with this guy and I can use the Grabber Tool or the Hand Tool to move things around as if though I were pressing the Spacebar on my keyboard. These guys on my main color and my additional color and these guys down here are our selectors which will give us access to different libraries, such as papers and nozzles and all kinds of cool things. So once again this is our Toolbox, feel free to work with it on the left or the right or the middle or anywhere you'd like to place it and this is where you're going to be going from time to time to click on your favorite Tools inside of Painter.
