Interface / Menus
Subtitles of the Movie
In Painter, like many other applications you'll find Menus everywhere, some are quite apparent because you can see them and some aren't. The ones that you can't see are usually invoked based on whatever you have selected. In the case of those types of Menus their called Contextual. I'll get back to that in a second. For now let's take a look at the Menu that we have up here. On the Macintosh you will find the Preferences for many of your applications under the Application Name. On a PC, on the Windows side you'll find it under the Edit Menu. So what the Menus allow you to do is to perform functions that you can also achieve by using the shortcuts. Now if you see these little Commands here this will of course bond to a series of clicks on your keyboard. So you press Command or Control N to perform a New Document on this particular menu or you could simply go to File, New and do the same thing. The File Menu allows you to open documents that you may have created earlier. You can go to the recent document list to open things that it remembers. You can open a template; you can also place artwork and perform other tasks that deal with cloning and saving. Also exporting things and emailing things. Last but not least of course you can print your documents. As you get to know the application you should try to use the shortcuts when possible. The Edit Menu allows you to undo things and also redo things. So you can go backwards and forwards in time. You can also Copy, Paste and Cut things and clear them. You can also transform and flip objects as well. The Canvas Menu of course deal with things that deal with the canvas. So you can rotate it, resize it, you can apply your lighting. You can open rulers and guides and deal with the Color Management Settings from here. The Layers Menu allows you to create new layers and interact with those layers. Select allows you to select and deselect and also to invert selections so that what is selected is no longer selected and vice versa. Here you create shapes, apply special effects, make movies, find palettes that you have hidden or gotten rid of by mistake and arrange workspaces. And of course you can find help with the Help Menu. Now there are other menus that are in this application that live on these little arrows that you see at the upper right corners of the palettes. You click on these guys to see options that are applicable to that particular palette. And as I mentioned there are also menus that are quite hidden, the Contextual Menus. If I right-click on the canvas I can see things that are applied to the canvas. So let me go ahead and grab the other tool here and here we go canvas. If I grab a Selection and draw one out and right-click in the Selection the menu changes. It keeps track of what you have selected and will provide you with the appropriate Contextual Menu so that you can interact with that object. So that is how you can use the varied menus inside of Painter to perform different kinds of operations.
