Using the Organizer / Using the Organizer

Subtitles of the Movie

In this lesson we're going to look at the organizer of Paint Shop Pro Photo XI. If it's not open, you can turn on the organizer by choosing the palettes button on the toolbar and selecting organizer. You can also turn it on or off by selecting control b on your keyboard. You can resize the organizer by dragging this resize bar up or down, so you can see more thumbnails in the organizer spacer at the bottom. Now you'll notice the organizer is divided into three functional areas. It's got a toolbar across the top, folders on the left hand side, and thumbnails in the large display here in the center. Alright let's walk across each of these areas in a little more detail. The little gear icon here gives you access to recent files that you have been editing. You can look at more folders, select all pictures here, select none and refresh the view. When you refresh, the thumbnails are updated and any pictures that you might have added to the folders are then included in the organizer. Alright. This little file cabinet toggles organizer mode on or off. If you select an image you want to delete there's a delete image icon. You can also change the zoom of all the thumbnails by dragging the slider backwards and forwards. You can sort thumbnails, right now we're sorting by the date. You can choose from several different options. You can also perform some basic image manipulation. A lot of times when you take photographs you hold the camera sideways, and so you need to rotate your pictures. You can rotate them by selecting an image and clicking the rotate button. Click review mode is accessed by clicking quick review and now you're working in full screen and then the pictures progress from one to the next in kind of a slideshow fashion as long as there's more than one picture selected. Escape is the key to use to get out of the quick review mode. You can also select a picture and print it, access information about it, email it, order prints online and find photos. There's a lot of functionality here in this toolbar. On the left hand side are the folders. These are the folders that Paint Shop Pro monitors. You can add pictures into these folders which then will show up in your organizer. I'm currently in the folder called "This Lesson" which has three movies and several pictures. You can tell that they're sorted by the date because the date taken is displayed along with the thumbnails. Alright. You can also add more folders by clicking add more folders and you can choose a folder to monitor. So if you have one place where you put all your digital images you can monitor that folder and then it will be added to the organizer. You can make a new folder or use an existing folder on your computer. If you click on the calendar, the calendar shows up showing today's date. You can navigate by month or by year. Tags and saved searches we'll save for later lessons but tags basically allow you to assign keywords to each picture, that allows you then to help search for things like, if you're taking a picture of birthdays you would assign a tag of birthday to those photos that are part of birthdays. You can also select pictures with people in them or events or any way you can do it. I would select this one and perhaps enter Benjamin and Jacob, so then you can search for every picture with one or both of them in it. Tags are a very powerful way to organize your photo collection. You can also right click on images and perform many of the same operations. If you right click in the gray area you can access preferences which shows you the organizer preferences. You can exclude also file formats and folders. That's very helpful if you only want to include JPEG s and not tiffs, or if you want to exclude something like My Documents or My Pictures. Alright so I think we can wrap this lesson up. It's fairly easy to use the organizer, you just turn it on and off, you add your pictures from Windows Explorer by just dragging them into the folders that are monitored. You can add more folders, take them out and you can also perform some editing functions from the organizer itself. To open up a file in Paint Shop Pro for editing you can double click or you can just drag it into the editing area of the main interface.
