NetDiag of course stands for Network Diagnostics. And it's a program that is available as part of the support tools for both Windows NT and Windows 2000. And what NetDiag does is it runs a standard set of network tests and then generates a report of the results. So it let's us know what is working and what is not working in Servers. It's especially helpful for DNS name resolution to determine what is working on a DNS Server. And oftentimes it's used to help with troubleshooting DNS name resolution. But it can also be used for other troubleshooting. And NetDiag can be controlled using what are called flags. And there is a whole class worth of information on DNS name resolution and even the use of NetDiag. So I would highly recommend that if you are interested in learning how to use this tool, that to take a look at more information about NetDiag, which can be found in Technet and in other technical journals. NetDiag is a tool that can be used for name resolution problems. Another tool that can be used for name resolution problems is NSLookup. Now NSLookup doesn't really do anything more than what the Graphical User Interface tools for a particular Network Operating System can do. In other words if we have a Windows NT 4.0 Server, we will have a DNS Interface, Graphical User Interface Tool And if we have a Windows 2000 Server, we will have a different DNS Graphical User Interface Tool. If we have a Netware Server, we will have some type of a DNS Graphical User Interface Tool. However, NSLookup can be used for all of these systems. So NSLookup can test a DNS Server no matter what kind of a DNS Server it is. Even if it's a Unix box, NSLookup can be used - it's a very flexible tool. And there are basically two different modes of NSLookup that we need to be familiar with for the test. One is command line, which means that we just ask one question and it gives us the result of that question. And the other is interactive, and interactive means that we can program the NSLookup to go in and get us some particular information and come back with that result. So we can get more than one answer with an interactive. It stays in the program: after it gets one piece of information it stays in waiting for us to get additional information. So NSLookup is a great tool for troubleshooting, and we can determine what NSLookup can offer us by typing 'nslookup' at a command prompt, and then after typing 'NSLookup', we press enter and then we press a question mark and press enter again. And this will list all of the commands that are available for NSLookup. It's a little bit different than an Nbtstat or Netstat, in that we are actually going into a shell, an NSLookup shell. And in order to get into that shell we type NSLookup at the command prompt and then press Enter, and that puts us into the shell. Then we press the question mark and press enter, and that will bring up all of our options. So troubleshooting is an important art to learn about a network, and we certainly need to learn how to take care of our servers and our network. But we also need to learn how to keep our network safe, no matter what happens. In our next section, we will discuss Disaster Recovery. And Disaster Recovery is the capability to go through what we would call a disaster, and to come out of it without losing any data and without losing any functionality or without losing functionality for a long period of time. And we will discuss Disaster Recovery in our next chapter.
