Overview & Foundation / Server Roles Pt.5

Subtitles of the Movie

A Web Server is an Application Server that works on the World Wide Web. In other words, it's a Server that provides applications for clients, or provides information for clients. But that information can be accessed from within an organization, or from outside of the organization through the Internet. And the Web Server is specifically designed to work on the Internet. It has it's own security features built in to the Web Server. A Video Server is specifically designed to offer videos through the organization. For example, the Human Resources Department might employ a video Server, so that when new people come on board they can look at some videos from their desktop. And they can simply access the right address, or possibly even just click on the right icon from their desktop and they can run the videos. We can also do live videos through video servers, by multicasting information through a network. For example, if the President wants to speak to certain executives within an organization but not to everyone within the organization, then the President could be anywhere in the world. And we could have a video conference and use the Video Server and the multicast capability of the organization to multicast the video conference - so that it goes to the right people and does not go to anybody that does not need to have that information. A CD-ROM Library Server is a specific Server that has many different drives for CD-ROM, sometimes called a Jukebox. And these servers are tremendously useful to a network especially for service packs. When we want to upgrade an operating system or an application, and we need for everyone to run a particular service pack, all we need to do is put the right disk in the right place and then send out an e-mail and tell everyone to hit that address. And then they will run that service pack; then when the newest service pack comes out, we will replace that disk with another one. CD-ROM libraries are also used for training. If an organization wants to store a tremendous amount of information so that people have access to it for training, but this information is constantly changing, then a CD-ROM library server is probably the way to go. Because it's easy to change out the jukebox when the time comes to put in the new information. Finally a Directory Services Server helps people locate things on the directory, or in the domain, or in the network. A Directory Services Server allows us to locate users and computers throughout the network. And the main Directory Services servers are Domain Controllers. Domain Controllers authenticate all of the users that come on to the network. In other words, they are the ones that take a look at the username and password and determine whether that entity, or whether that person or computer, has access to the resources that they are trying to get to. Director Services servers are designed to get people access to things that they need to have access to, while keeping them away from things that they should not have access to. So these are all of the different Server roles and there are probably more. But these are the good ones to know for the training that we are going to go through, and these are the good ones to know for the test. In our next section, we are going to discuss more about the components that make up a network. That's in our next chapter.
