Overview & Foundation / Server Categories

Subtitles of the Movie

There are four general categories of Servers. There are Workgroup Servers, Departmental Servers, Enterprise servers and Server Appliances. A Workgroup Server is generally a small Server designed to provide resources for twenty to fifty clients. It's generally used in a network in a small office or home office type of network. Generally a Workgroup Server would have a single processor and a relatively small amount of memory. The Workgroup Server is the Server that can do some of the processing for the client, but it's not designed to be used in a large-scale network environment. A Departmental Server is specifically set up to perform a task for a particular department or particular part of an organization. An example of the Departmental Server might be a web server that has multiple processors and a considerable amount of memory as well as disk storage. Generally, Departmental servers are upgradeable. So that as the organization changes, these Server can be upgraded to meet the new needs. And Enterprise Server is a huge Server designed to support many thousands of clients; it has tremendous hard drive capability and tremendous memory capability. As a matter of fact, Enterprise servers can have up to 32 processors and 64 gigabytes of RAM. So Enterprise servers are designed for the needs of a huge environment, or designed to provide Server Resources to many different organizations. Some Enterprise servers might be used for the Web, for example for companies such as Yahoo or other companies that aid in searches on the web. These are tremendously huge Servers; large corporations might use these type of Servers. And finally a relatively new development is the Server Appliance; a Server Appliance is generally designed to go into a Server Rack. And typically it's a very small box, and it's designed to provide one service to the computer network. That might be that it's a web Server or it might be that it's a firewall. But this Server is specifically designed with that in mind, and that's all it does. And we install the Server Appliance and then configure it to help out in the network. That way the other servers don't have to provide that service and can focus on other things. So there are many different Server categories, and within the different Server categories we have many different Server roles - roles that Server can perform to provide resources for the network. And we will talk about Server roles in our next section.
