Network Components / Disk Subsystem Overview
Subtitles of the Movie
So far with today's technologies, it's not possible to store everything that we are going to compute on RAM or ROM: that just wouldn't be possible. In order to store tremendous amounts of information, we use disk drives. And our disk subsystem is made up of all of our disk drives, and then all of the controllers that manage the process of moving data back and forth on the disk drives. And there are basically two different general configurations of disk drives, which are IDE or ATA and SCSI (Small Computer Systems Interface). Each has their own advantages. IDE is preferable to workstations, because it is easier to setup and is basically already part of the computer board in a workstation. SCSI is more preferable to servers because of faster technologies. But just like everything else in the personal computer industry, disk subsystems have evolved over time as well. And we will discuss not only IDE but also Extended IDE or Enhanced IDE, and Ultra ATA, Ultra DMA which are simply enhancements on IDE technology. And we will also discuss the futuristic IDE technology of Serial ATA. We will take a look at advantages and disadvantages of each. Then we will turn our attention to SCSI (Small Computer Systems Interface); and SCSI has evolved over time as well. There are basically three standards of SCSI: SCSI-1, SCSI-2 and SCSI-3. SCSI-3 is also called ultra SCSI. And we will discuss advantages of using SCSI especially in Servers, and then we will also discuss the newest technologies employed by disk subsystems: SMART (Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology), Fiber Channel, SSA, SAN and NAS. And we will take a look at the advantages and disadvantages in all of these new technologies, and we will compare the features and benefits of IDE technology versus SCSI technology. So we will start off talking about IDE - that's next.
