SFTP is one of those really confusing technologies and acronyms that have come along simply because of the way it's named and SFTP, as it turns out, stands for SSH or Secure Shell File Transfer Protocol. Now this is another one of those things that for Windows people, you might not be as familiar with it, it might look a little strange, but this is another tool that has kind of evolved out of the Unix world. This is also known as Secure File Transfer Protocol, and so when you hear people talking about Secure FTP or Shell FTP, they're talking about SFTP, one and the same. Now this is yet another extension of using that Secure Shell Protocol because it does a very good job of encrypting traffic between two computers, and we're going to use that to basically do our file transfers. Now this replaced the Secure Copy functionality that I talked about in a different video here in this course, so this is what replaced SCP and why? It introduced some functionalities and some cool little tricks that SCP just didn't have. One example, like you see here is, you can resume interrupted transfers with SFTP, and this is a big deal because a lot of times with FTP the reason you're using FTP is you're trying to get some sizable files. And it's really irritating to download 250 megabytes of a 260 megabyte file only to lose the network connection or a power hit or something. This will let you continue those interrupted transfers. You can also get directory listings through SFTP. You couldn't do that with SCP. And you can also remove remote files with this, so this really becomes like a file management tool as well. Now another bit of confusion with SFTP is that it also gets confused, for some administrators, and you'll kind of show your age and your platform a little bit here, but this gets confused with Simple File Transfer Protocol. And probably even eight out of ten administrators, if you showed them the acronym SFTP and ask them what it means, a lot of them would say Simple File Transfer Protocol. This is something that was out there a few years ago but it was never really widely used. And now with the standards committees it's in what's called historical status. Nobody's really using Simple File Transfer Protocol anymore, and the acronym has kind of gotten sucked up by this Secure Shell File Transfer Protocol. So more acronym soup for you here, sorry to do it to you, but watch for SFTP. If you see this on the exam, just know that they're talking about Secure Shell File Transfer Protocol. They could also refer to it as Secure File Transfer Protocol.
