Welcome/Intro / Course Structure

Let's talk about the structure of this course. Ah, I want you to have a road map and have a feeling of where you're headed here and what we're going to cover and why. Ah, I'll start off talking about certification and testing basics. Ah, if you've purchased the A Plus 2006 exam prep tutorial then it's pretty obvious that you're either just now getting into this industry, or maybe you've had your hands on computers for a while and you're trying to formally get into a, ah, position, or maybe you're trying to apply for jobs with folks who don't know you and anyway the A Plus Certification will absolutely certainly help that. Now, having said that obviously you may be a little bit green or new to the idea of certification testing basics and so I'll cover those to try to help you out. Then we jump right into the courseware and I want to point out, I know from previous tutorials everybody likes to see a lot of hands-on. They want to see everything happen on the screen, not just a bunch of words showing up like they are right now, and uh, me talking about them. Unfortunately in the A Plus ah, exam, ah, a lot of what you're going to learn is theory, a lot of it is ah, rote memorization, putting little facts and pieces of information in your brain and then correlating them, and so ah, I will do hands-on as much as possible. I promise you that. But we'll start off talking about how PCs work generally, then we'll go into the processor itself, we'll talk about memory and some of the issues there, BIOS and CMOS. If this is something you have not had a lot of corporate experience on PCs you probably haven't played with these very much. Expansion bus, what it is, what it does. Motherboards. Then we'll talk about power supplies, hard drives and media, and we'll do a little bit on Microsoft Windows, ah, video and audio, then we'll go to portables, then we get to printers and networking and security and then we're going to end up with computer technician basics. Now I ran through all that because I want you to understand we're going to cover a lot of information here, and I went by the A Plus stated objectives for their exams and I've tried my best to put as much of that in here as I can. But let me warn you about something. There's a possibility of ah, maybe six million different questions they could ask you. There is a lot of stuff in here. No doubt I'm going to miss one or two things. I would strongly recommend that you go through this course and then you get the A Plus objectives, print them out, and go through them and make sure there's nothing on there that you don't understand. Ah, as I went through the course I tried to take things off of that A Plus objectives to make sure that I was covering everything, and it is really, really hard to cover everything in any kind of particular order, and so you will hear a lot of information as it's ah, kind of related or co-related in other areas so it may appear to be out of place in here, but it was kind of the best I could do with trying to organize and get it all in one place. So, go through this. I would not recommend in this course that you skip any of these. Ah, even if you're ah, feel you're up to speed and you, and you know it, and you may well know it, but ah, go through there, because like I said, in places where, for example, networking ah correlates to security, ah I may throw something in there; ah same thing for printers and, and obviously ah the Windows operating system and so forth. So, anyway, ah that's where we're headed so let's get busy.
