Let's take a look at some sample test questions on powering the PC. Let's take a look at this first one here. Besides providing power for the PC what else does the power supply provide? A. Surge protection. Umm, nope. ESD protection, electro static discharge protection? Nope. It doesn't do that. C. Cooling, or D. all of the above. Well, we know it doesn't do surge or ESD, but it does do cooling and so the correct answer is C. And if you'll remember, the fan on the power supply is generally what pulls the air through the PC and actually cools the PC itself. So it's actually taking on two roles. It ah keeps the power supply cool and the computer itself. Next question. And, now I've got this question here for a purpose, okay. What precautions should you take before opening a power supply to repair it? Choice A: unplug the power supply. Ummm, okay. Talk about it in a minute. B. put on rubber gloves. C. consult the PSU manual, or D. none of the above. The correct answer is none of the above. Make sure you hear this. Don't ever, under any circumstance, open a power supply and stick your fingers or tools in there. Power supplies still have ah, electricity stored in them. Ah, you can be hurt, maybe even killed. Don't open a power supply. Once a power supply starts doing weird things, ah, get rid of it, junk it, go get a new one, but do not ever, under any circumstances open a power supply and try to repair it. So, anyway. Good reason for that question there. Ah, last one. Which connector does a floppy disk drive use? Mini, Rolex, Nylon, or Standard. Now I threw Rolex in there just for fun. The correct term that I'm trying to use there, there's a Molex connector, not a Rolex, that's a watch, but ah, it's not even a Molex, and if you remember the mini-connector is the one that's used by a floppy disk drive. Nylon connector? No such thing. Standard connector? I'm sure there's a standard connector somewhere, but it's not what we use. The mini-connector is the only one used for a floppy disk drive. So again, you can see, just a general understanding of the terms and how these things are used, what the particular pieces or devices do, how they work together will help you get past these questions and um, so um, again, look over these, make sure that you understand the interrelation of the parts and you should be fine on ah, power when you get to the exam.
