Let's go over three sample test questions now on portable computing and ah, just kind of give you an idea of what you might be up against on the exam. First of all, which of the following was a major problem with nickel cadmium batteries? Well, first choice: they developed a memory; they leaked acid; the high pitched noise; or all of the above, what do you think? Well, time's up. They developed a memory, and if you remember when we talked about these things you were supposed to ah, discharge these things from time to time, all the way down to dead and then recharge them. They developed a memory for how much energy ah, how long you used them last time, and they would generally only work that long, and they were a real pain and problem, and ah, so anyway, thank goodness we don't have to deal with them ah that much anymore. Next question: What is the thickness of a type 3 PC card? Now this is good example of some of the things that they might do to you on the exam and you've got to make sure you're paying attention. Notice five m, that means meters, so a five meter card would be ah really too large to carry around, right? A ten and a half meter card would be even worse. Five millimeter? Ah, that's more like it; or ten and a half millimeters, and if you remember the correct answer, 10 and a half millimeters. You need to be aware of the sizes on those PC cards because you could see that question on the exam. Now, last one. When a portable computer, that means laptop, enters hibernation, where is the data stored? On a floppy diskette; in RAM; it's discarded; or, on the hard disk. Now first of all, not on a floppy disk. You're never asked to insert a floppy disk to enter hibernation mode on a laptop. So forget that one. Now RAM, it, ah, RAM is a possibility, but if you remember RAM is where it goes on a Standby operation, not a hibernation, so I should have just given it away to you. C. It's discarded; ah that would be useless to ah put a computer in hibernation and lose your data, so that's not a correct answer. The correct answer is D, the hard disk. When we go into hibernation, everything is shut down and the information that's in RAM gets written down to the hard disk and it gets called back up when you bring it out of hibernation, so anyway. There's your sample test questions on portables and ah, this should help get you going, but again, ah, you could see quite a few questions on portables, so ah, study up, be ready.
