Personal Computer Basics / Sample Test Questions

Subtitles of the Movie

Let's go over some sample test questions on this first section of the video because I realize that most people who are taking an A Plus exam, this is their first certification exam most likely. And the first thing I want to tell you is you'll be nervous, you've paid 158 bucks, and you just, you've, there's so much information that you feel like you're trying to cram into your brain, but trust me. You've got it. If you just read over it a few times and some of the things I'll give you just for rote memorization in the course here, you will be fine. But I want to show you a ah question and give you some pointers ah as we go through the course here. First of all, let's look at this question together. The keyboard's used to perform which of the following basic tasks? Now, the first thing I'll tell you is read the question a couple of times and make sure you know what they're asking you. The keyboard is used to perform which of the following basic tasks? Okay. Now, let's look at our answer possibilities. Programming; Input; Output; or Storage. The first thing I always do first of all is ask myself do I have a clue what they're talking about here? On the A Plus exam, if you see a question the first three or four or five questions if you see them and you don't have a clue, you're not sure about the answer, you'll have a little place in the upper right hand corner, I believe it is, on the exam, where you can mark that question and come back to it later. What I've found in these tests is a lot of times, first of all you're just nervous, so the first three or four you're thinking I'm in the wrong place, you know, my mother-in-law was right all along, you know, I should have been a plumber, all that kind of stuff, you're just nervous. So skip this question and go to the next one. If you have to, skip that one, go to the next one. After about three or four of these, you will hit a question and you will just instantly know the answer and you'll just pick it and there's no problem. Suddenly, you've become Joe Computer and you go back and you look at these first few and like, Oh, this is a piece of cake, okay. So if, now, watch your screen, I don't think they've changed this, but somewhere in there, up ah on the top of the screen you'll see a place where you can mark it and then go to the next question. So you can come back and, and check them later. Now it's not unusual for you to get a question later on in the test that will answer this question for you, so keep that in mind as you go through. So let's take a look. How would you answer this? First of all, I'm going to knock out the things unless I just know what the correct answer is, but I'm always going to read over all the answers and make sure that they haven't tricked me. So the keyboard is used to perform which of the following basic tasks. Does it do storage? No. So let's forget storage. It's not going to be storage. Does the keyboard do output? No. So let's take that one off. So it's either programming or input. No, do you do programming with the keyboard? Well, technically yes, but remember the basic tasks ah, we talked about this earlier in a different video, was input. So let's just check, and yes, input is the correct answer. Okay. So you notice what I did? I knocked two of them out because I know for sure what it doesn't do, and then it was at least down to a 50-50 guess if I didn't know input. So let's go to the next one. Which connector would be used to connect a PC to a network? Here's our possibles: RJ45? Yeah. It's, it's either that or RJ11, right? I remember that. Wait a minute, what about UNC, universal network connector, have you ever heard of that? I really haven't heard of that, so I'm going to cross that off. And in reality there is no such thing, I made that up. And then Universal Network Consolidator, and you will see things that don't even exist, okay. On the exam, you're not going to mark these off, I'm just doing it here so that we can get accustomed to um seeing what we've got. So, RJ11 or RJ45. Now, if you remember the RJ45 was the larger of the two and that's what we use to connect to a network and it's not RJ11, so I would choose A, and sure enough, you know, that's, that's going to be a correct answer on that one. Let's do one more. Which USB connector type will you find on the back of a PC? Here's my choices: mini-A, B, A, or universal. Well, if you remember the mini-A was that real small one, that's not going to be there. Universal, that's something somebody's made up, and then there's B and A, and if you remember B was that little square one, right, with the little house-top on it, and that is always on the USB device, right? And so, that's not going to be the answer. A is that little rectangle one and that's the one you're going to see on the back of a computer so, we're going to go with A, and that would be the right answer. So, bottom line. Read these questions two or three times and make sure you know what they're looking for. Look at the answer possibilities, and a lot of times that will put the ah question into context. Now, the sample questions, look back over these, go through these a couple of times, you will see questions this simple. You don't see the two-paragraph half-page questions on the A Plus that you do on some of the, the ah, the more involved certifications, ah, MCSEs, CISCOs, and so forth, so you're going to see typically one sentence ah, questions and you just simply pick the correct answer. So play ah with this, and I'll give you some more test tips ah later on.
