Personal Computer Basics / Under The Hood
Subtitles of the Movie
Let's take a quick look under the hood, and I want to do this kind of early in the video because I want you to kind of be able to feel comfortable with what's inside the PC. Now this is a little different for every PC you look in, ah, mine is an, an HP box, and so what I'm going to do is, let's just ah, just go inside and take a look. Now what I've done, is I've taken a picture of the inside of my PC and I just want to point out some of the things that you can see here, and we go more in-depth on a lot of these a little later on. First thing. You never want to open your PC unless it's unplugged, and you never want to reach in here and touch anything until you first ah touch the case, and remember, you should have a wrist strap on, okay. So, you should be wearing some sort of ah, ah ESD protection. So anyway, let's take a look and see what's in here. Ah, first of all, I'll just point out a couple of things and you're going to see the same major components inside any PC that you open. First of all, this right here is the fan that's sitting on top of the processor. So I'm talking about this little guy right here. So this is ah, this is the processor sitting on the motherboard, and ah, obviously this whole thing here that you're seeing here, this is the motherboard, okay. And we can see some other things here. Notice here's some PCI slots, we'll talk about those a little bit later on in the video. There's AG, looks like an AGP ah slot here, yes. Ah, then right over here, I don't know if you can see these very well, they're kind of standing up. I moved over to the side so we could see them. These are RAM, there's my RAM memory slots and if you'll notice here, I don't know if you can tell, I've got two in and I've got one here and one here, so I've got two more available. And right now I think I've got two gigs. These are two one-gig sticks here, so I can go up to four gigs on this box. Now you'll notice right down here, plugged into one of these ports, these PCI ports, ah, here's a modem card that's plugged in. There it is, but there it's kind of hard to see. Ah, and you'll notice out here, now this computer has what's called onboard ah graphics, ah onboard ah network card, and so forth, and you can see right here, here's the network card plugged into the machine and that little thing right here, the, the ah network card's built into the motherboard, okay. And then right here, let me erase these, right here is the audio plug coming in and the sound card is integrated, or built into the motherboard as well. Now, right over here you'll see is the hard disk, and ah, it's mounted right there near the front. Ah, right up here, these wires go to the front of the PC and I've got a bunch of ah audio connectors, USB connectors, I've got a um bank of things that will hold SD cards, the, the compact Flash cards, SmartMedia and so forth, memory sticks and all that kind of stuff will plug in. And then this is the little back-up unit that's unique to HP. This little HP media drive bay that you can back up on. Now, if you'll notice all the ribbon cables here? This, this ribbon cable right here? This red one? This is connecting the hard drive to the motherboard, and right here you'll see this little guy right over here, these are the power. This goes to the little power button on the front and you'll notice they're connected to the motherboard. And then right up here at the top, and it's not really in the picture but you can see the bottom corner of it, this is the power supply, okay. And so, again, not a whole lot going on. And one other thing I want to point out. It's, it's cool to open your PC and look in there and see what's going on. Be very careful about ESD, don't touch any of this stuff with you're bare fingers. You've got grease on them, you'll bend some of these things and break them and it won't work, but also you don't want to leave your PC like this. Ah, air flow is very important for cooling and ventilation for this thing and when you leave this side off like this it's not directing, these fans are designed, you can barely see the, the cover of the fan right here, is designed to pull air through the computer and then out the back, and this air flow coming through here and circulating and then going out, keeps everything ah cool and this processor really generates a lot of heat so if you don't have the side on the computer the air flow is not correct and you can overheat. So, anyway, ah, that's what's going on inside your PC. You may want to take a look at yours and see if you can identify some of these same parts and we will concentrate on some of these a lot more later on in the video.
