Introducing Dreamweaver / Application Panel
Subtitles of the Movie
In this movie, we're going to go through the application panel in Dreamweaver and if you are already familiar with this panel, this is a movie that you can skip. We won't be doing any setups specific to ColdFusion or this course. I just want to talk about what the different tabs are, since we won't really address it in later movies. So if you click the word application up in your panels area, you will see everything is grayed out at this point, so we need to open up a page so I will click create new ColdFusion or control N. We have that set up as a ColdFusion page. You will now see that this application panel has some space and is active. What I'm going to do is give it a little more space. You put your cursor right above the tag inspector there. When it turns to the double arrow, you can move it down. And I'll show you in a minute why I'm doing that. But there are four tabs in this application panel. The first one shows your database information. Now, we do not have SUMA set up as a data source at this point. We'll be doing that shortly. So SUMA is not listed as a database. So where did these come from? When you installed the getting started and example folders or files for ColdFusion when you installed ColdFusion, these were installed along with the program. So if I click the plus sign in front of one of them, and then click the plus in front of tables, you will see the database name is CFdocexamples and these are all the different tables in that database and you can see this is a fairly large database, so those are the different tables. If I click the plus inside of or in front of any of the tables here, it will show you the different items in the table itself. So let's pick a little bit better one. This one's better to see. So in our centers table, inside this specific database, these are the different fields in the database, the types of characters that will be taken inside of there and also the total number of characters that your database will accept; that specific field will accept. This is really handy information to have when you're creating forms to insert into a database. You don't want to be inserting more characters than the database will accept or you will get an error every time. So this is a nice feature. It allows you to access the database. We'll look at this again when we set up the SUMA database. The next tab is your bindings tab and what this allows you to do is access the record set builder to build a query or create different types of variables inside of ColdFusion in your application. So the bindings panel allows you to create these different types of variables, along with the query. Those are the most common uses of the bindings tab. Server behaviors tab; these are pre-bit, pre-built bits of code that allow you to do different features inside of Dreamweaver. So these are built into the Dreamweaver program. A very handy one is insert record and update record and delete record. We also have user authentication for logins; makes coding much simpler. So drop a whole chunk of code on and it will all be ColdFusion code done by Dreamweaver. The last tab is your components tab. This one takes a minute to open because it's pulling out all the components that are available to me and I'll move this over just a little bit. You can see we have some getting started components in here and we will readdress this components tab when we get to working with CFCs later in the course. But anytime you have a component in ColdFusion, you have access to it here. This is the name of the component, these are the different methods available inside the component and like I said, we'll work with those later. So that is ColdFusion specific in terms of the components tab. The other item in this tab is web services. If you are working in web services within ColdFusion, you can add them here. So components and web services you access through this components panel. So those are all located inside the application area and these are all different tabs inside that. You can always get to any of them specifically through this area right here. So that is the application panel inside of the Dreamweaver interface.
