Course Setup / Dreamweaver Preferences
Subtitles of the Movie
In this movie, we're going to look at customizing Dreamweaver and there's really just three different areas we want to do that to. So what you're looking at is the default Dreamweaver set up, just as if you've just installed the program, but as I mentioned in the other movie, this will not be showing for you at this point. We'll be setting that up in a separate movie. So your files panel will look slightly different. Now, in terms of customizing Dreamweaver, let's have you click this create new HTML. You'll find that the panels and things such as your insert bar won't show up if we don't have a page open. So if I close this, you'll see everything's grayed out. So we're just opening up a new page so that you can actually make some modifications to this area. This is called the insert bar and what you want to do is click this down arrow and go down to show as tabs. The insert area is much easier to see what's going on if we have this set up in tab view. The other way it's hard to tell and you have to keep switching things. So I'll refer to it, the layout tab, the text tab and it makes it much easier to get to it. The other thing we want to do is go into edit preferences and we're going to modify the new document area. So select new document in the left-hand side and what we want to do is change this just as it is here. So we're going to make our default document ColdFusion. When you first install Dreamweaver, it's set to basic HTML. So go ahead and choose ColdFusion; just the word ColdFusion here and you'll see our default extension is not .cfm. The other thing you want to do is uncheck this box. This should be checked by default and we want to uncheck that and one last thing we're going to do is move down into the preview in browser and I do have a separate movie to help you set up this area in terms of customizing that, but we want to uncheck under options, preview using temporary file. I usually use this when I'm developing static pages, but when I move into dynamic pages, I uncheck this box. So just make sure this box is unchecked and in the new document area, this show new document dialog is unchecked and your default document is ColdFusion. That's really all we need to customize in the preferences area, so click OK. Now if you hit control N and go to file, save as, you will see you now have .cfm as the default document. So I do usually like to check that once I've made that change, so you may want to do that. So hit control N. That gives you a new document and hit file, save as and just make sure it gives you a .cfm extension. If not, go back to that preferences area under new document and switch it to ColdFusion and that's all we need to do to customize for our course. As I mentioned, if you're new to Dreamweaver, there's a whole section on the Dreamweaver interface. That's the best way to put it. So you'll want to make sure to go through those movies. If you're already familiar with Dreamweaver, you can skip that section of movies.
