ColdFusion MX 7 Advanced Tutorials

Course Setup / Installing Coldfusion

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, we're going to look at the installation of ColdFusion MX7 and what I did for this course, unlike the basic course, was I took some photos of the install screens themselves so that we can walk through them and I also have a copy of that in your course files, should you wish to look this over or have it handy while you are actually installing ColdFusion. We'll talk about different screens as we go through this movie. So the first screen is once you get the ColdFusion and you double click on that to open it, you get the welcome screen. So we'll move on from that screen. You just click the next button here to move on. The next screen you will see is the license agreement screen. Obviously, you have to accept the terms of the license agreement and click next. If you do not accept those, you won't be installing the software. So at this point, we need to choose which version we're going to install. Now, what I downloaded was the trial version or the developer addition, whichever one you download, this will be the same screen you see. If you have a full version of ColdFusion, then you obviously would put in your serial number. If you are using the trial or the developer edition, you can see this section is grayed out. So what is the difference between these two? The 30-day trial version is the full enterprise edition of ColdFusion, which defaults to this developer edition after 30 days. What I do is just install the developer edition. It has everything you need to develop in ColdFusion and it's absolutely free. It does not expire. So it is just missing some things that web posts and ISPs would need, or anybody who's actually maintaining a cluster of servers or all of the web servers themselves. So as a developer, it's not really something you have to be concerned about, so the developer edition is what I have checked. In terms of the installer configuration, this is really the first screen that tends to confuse people. What you want to do is install using the first radio button. This is for a multiple-server configuration. If you had clustered servers and you wanted to install ColdFusion and allow them to work with multiple web servers, then that is the configuration you would use. The third radio button is if you're working in a J2EE environment on a J2EE server. And we are not using that, so we will click this first radio button. If you went to install this on the Windows IIS server, or even Apache server, you would choose this same radio button. So go ahead and click next. And then we move into subcomponents. I have all three checked. I would recommend that for sure you check the ODBC. Search services allows you to run Verity, so that is something you will probably want in the future and what I like about this third radio button is the documentation. It allows you to get to a lot of documentation within the ColdFusion administrator. It installs that. So I do tend to install that as well. So go ahead and check all three and choose next and I always use the default installation directory, so that is chosen for you. It's the CFusion MX7 directory that will be created when you install the program. Now, the next two screens deal with the web server itself and passwords, and actually there's two password screens plus this web server. So if you have a web server already installed that you want to configure ColdFusion to work with, it would be listed here and you would choose this first options and tell ColdFusion where the server is located. We are going to use the built-in JRun server. Notice it says development use only. You would not want to put this on a production machine, but this is the server we're going to be using for this course. I want to work with this so you know how to use it, so choose the built-in web server in that screen. Our next screen gets into password situations and there are two passwords we're going to set. We're going to set them and make it very simple. Set them the same. The administrator password is a password that's needed to log in to the ColdFusion administrator, which is what actually controls ColdFusion server. So that is something that you must turn on. Notice this field is required. You must turn it on on install. When I'm developing, I obviously turn this off. It's a pain to have to enter the password every time I go into the administrator. So we're going to enter lowercase cf for ColdFusion. So lowercase cf in both of those screens. Now we'll move on next to the RDS password. Actually, I have that one listed twice. So the RDS password is remote development service. It allows Dreamweaver to speak and work with ColdFusion, the application server itself. So we want to enable RDS right here. That enables it so that Dreamweaver can talk to ColdFusion. You must add a password in order to do that, but we're going to go in just like the administrator password and remove those coming up shortly. So make sure you check the enable RDS or Dreamweaver will not be able to communicate with the administrator and you will have some trouble. So enable RDS here, lowercase c, lowercase f, just like the last screen. And then we move into the congratulations, here is your confirmation of everything you're going to install and then you will get an installation is complete screen, which I did not put on here, once you are done. So this just shows you your server configuration. You can see all three of those are going to be installed. We'll talk about port 8500 coming up here shortly when we go to test the ColdFusion server. So that is the installation of ColdFusion. I think as long as you know what these screens mean, you'll find it very straightforward. I really have not had issues in the past with the ColdFusion installation itself. So please move on to some of the other movies, specifically testing the ColdFusion server and we will look at the ColdFusion administrator and remove passwords in that movie.
