Advanced Access Control Software / Access Management Console

Subtitles of the Movie

This is Citrix Access Gateway Advanced Edition 4.5 and in this video we're going to discuss the Access Management Console. Now the Access Management Console is the centralized console that all of the new Citrix Products use, depending upon the product that's installed and the snap-ins if you will that are installed into this Access Management Console determines what Citrix Products you will be able to administer with that console. We have gone through the installation of the Advanced Access Server and we're going to launch the Access Management Console against our Advanced Access Server for the first time and let's say I bring this up as bring the first time simply because it is a little different, there is an extra step or two you have to take with it being the first time that you've run it. First things first, let's create a shortcut for this on the Desktop so we don't have to go digging for it every time. So you go under Programs, Citrix, Management Consoles and there is the Access Management Console. So I'll drag it out here and make a shortcut, put it where it needs to go and we'll double click it. It does its initial launching process, it initializes it and sets up the snap-ins and what not and once discovery is run we now have the Citrix Access Management Console. Now usually when this console is launched for the first time against an Advanced Access Server Farm it prompts you to run Discovery manually and you have to check a check box that says, Close this Discovery Window Automatically when the Discovery process is complete. And you will see that particular little Discovery Window every time you launch the Access Management Console for the Citrix Access Farm. Just in case you've added Access Gateway Appliance or Advanced Access Control Servers, et cetera, it will discover it then when you launch the console. That's also something to keep in mind, is that if you have the console open and you add a server to your Access Farm you will have to close and reopen the Access Management Console for those changes to take effect. So let's look at the basic layout of the Access Management Console, get familiar with where all of the options are, where all of the different Configuration Settings are inside this console and get an introduction to the terminology that Citrix uses for its Access Farms. First off on the left hand side is where you have the various categories of Administrative Settings. The first few options up here aren't really used that much in the Access Gateway Farm, their more or less used with Presentation Server and with some of Citrix's other products. But since this is a common console they are in here. If you had alerts that were common to the entire Citrix Deployment you could view them here, obviously we have no alerts because we have nothing configured in our Access Farm quite yet. Here are the Search Results Window, if you do a search inside the Access Management Console this is where you're taken. You can go back to the last search results at anytime by going to this Search Results Node in the left hand side of the Access Management Console. Obviously we have not searched for anything yet so there's nothing there. You then have the My Views section of the console; we'll get into this elsewhere in the course. But you can set Custom Views so that you don't have to go looking for the same bits of information or the same Configuration Options every time you open the console. You can save it as a My View and then go directly tot hat view without having to again search around for it every time. And again since the License Management Server is web administered all you really have to do is add a shortcut here so that you don't have to go digging around in the Start Menu for them like we did last time. You then have the Citrix Diagnostic facility and again this is another one of those options that aren't really used in the Advanced Access Farm, Citrix could use it in this scenario but they generally don't, they never have in my experience. And then finally you get to the meat of the configuration that we'll be doing, where we'll be spending most of our time, under Citrix Resources and we drilled down under Access Gateway and there's our Farm that we set up when we first installed all of this, named Demo Farm 1. If you click on it you'll see shortcuts to Resources, shortcuts to Policies. You will see our shortcuts to Logon Points, there's our servers, basically everything that's over on this left hand side you can get to using this Contents Pane of just the Farm and that's true of any level your at within this. For example if I were click on Policies here's our Policies and here's our Default Log On Policy and you'll notice that those are what's over on the left hand side, you have Continuous Scan Filters and Access Policies and Connection Policies. Obviously we'll be getting into this elsewhere in the title. The last two things we will look at are Logon Points and Servers. We'll go ahead and expand both of those. When you install the Citrix Access Gateway Advanced Edition a sample Logon Point is created. We'll get into Logon Points elsewhere in the title, but it's important to note that this sample Logon Point is extremely insecure. In fact it says so in the description, this sample Logon Point is not secure. It should be modified or deleted before the system is deployed in a production environment. The reason this Logon Point is insecure is not anything inherent in the way its configured. It's going to be secure from sniffing attacks or for remote access attacks, it's insecure in the fact that there are no policies associated with this default Logon Point, meaning that anyone that discovers this Logon Point and has a valid account in the Domain can log on and there's no restrictions based upon User IDs or Active Directory Groups or anything like that. So, we'll be creating other Logon Points but just remember this sample Logon Point is there and you probably need to disable it or delete it pretty soon upon installing the software especially if it's going to a production environment or a production network. Next, we have the Servers; if you click on the Servers Tab you can get alerts and trace sessions on a per server basis. If we had multiple servers you'd see them all listed here. This way you could look at the alerts for all servers or from any given Access Server in your Access Farm. And this concludes our discussion of the Access Management Console.
