Citrix Access Gateway Advanced 4.5 Tutorials

Advanced Access Control Software / License Console pt. 1

Subtitles of the Movie

This is Citrix Access Gateway Advanced Edition 4.5 and in this video we're going to discuss the License Console. Now as we discussed elsewhere in the course when we installed the Access Gateway Software we know that the License Management Console is a web based console that runs on the server you install as License Management Server and you can get to this License Management Console by going to Start, Programs under Citrix, Management Consoles and choose the License Management Console. This brings up the website on the local host or whatever host you have defined as your License Management Console and gives you the front page based upon your access rights. Obviously we're logged in as Administrator right now so we have full access rights to anything running on this server. You will show you as we go through this Management Console where you can limit individuals so that they can only read Licenses or they can't access it at all if you want to lock it down that far. So we'll go through all of the major options here on the License Management Console and when we're done we'll also upload the License that we have set up for our Access Server Farm. Over on the left hand side of the main page we have the Language Selector, obviously it reads our locale from our currently installed version of Windows and it chooses US English for us. If we happen to speak Spanish we could choose Spanish and there's all the menus in Spanish. My Spanish is not very good so we'll go back to US English. The first option we have is to view current usage data. This is a static view and it just shows you what licenses are installed and what number of them are used. In this case we have the Citrix Start Up License which you get when you install the software and here's our Citrix Access Gateway Advanced and Standard Edition User Licenses, we have 10 set up for our lab here. Now the licenses that you see in this screen are only licenses that are currently valid. If you had like Trial Licenses or other expired licenses you wouldn't see them in the current usage chart because you can't currently use them. If you click this Complete License Inventory it will take you to a screen that would show you the subscription advantage date, whether its expired, et cetera Since we don't have any of those type of licenses this complete license inventory looks exactly like the current inventory. But that is the distinction between these two. So if we close this window, we go back to the Current Usage Tab. Now we're going to use these Tabs across the front to get around. You'll notice that you've got Historical Usage Configuration and User Administration; these are the same options that you have on the very front screen. So it's the same information that you're getting to just obviously in a different way. So we'll go to Historical Usage, this is a reporting facility, when you have logging set up you can report on those logs based upon how many licenses have I used over the past six months. Do I ever exceed my license count by any number? Do I hit the top of my license count, et cetera etc. This is a way of looking back to see whether you need to add more licenses so that hopefully you can acquire said licenses before users start getting denied messages from either the Access Gateway Farm or the Access Gateway. We'll go to the Configuration Tab; this is where you can configure the license file, IE Upload License Files. You can set the location on the local server for the License Files and you can modify the threshold options. Obviously the License Files section is fairly straight forward, it lists the licenses, you could click on these License Files and download them or you could click this Link right here and browse to a file and upload it to the License Server. It's very straight forward, you simply hit Browse, you'd go to, for example, My Documents and here is the Citrix Start Up and the License for the Access Gateway. Now we won't upload it because we already have this license installed but if you wanted to, you would just hit the Upload Button. As you can see specifying an existing file will just case it to be overwritten, you won't really get any error messages other then, hey you're about to overwrite an existing License File are you sure? And if you hit Yes it overwrites the License File which is very useful if said License File becomes corrupted somehow, which does happen from time to time. You can also look at the File Locations, this is where the different files are kept, the Options File, the Debug Log, the Report Log and let's you know when the last license back up was done. Again none of this stuff is configured in our lab environment. In a production environment you'd want to turn this on but reporting on Licensing Events is a little outside the scope of this course. We're going through the License Server Manager just simply so you can see how to upload a license once you install your Access Gateway. The third option is the Threshold Options; these are the License Consumption Thresholds and the Subscription Advantage Dates Thresholds which you will be alerted on when you hit 75 percent for example, of your available licenses, you will get a warning in your License Log. When you hit 90 percent on the licenses available you'll get a critical level error in your License Log and the same thing for the Subscription Advantage Date. You get a warning when you're 30 days out from it expiring and you get a critical when its 10 days out from expiring. You can also change these thresholds by simply clicking on the Change Link here, it's a very straight forward process that we won't go through, because you simply just enter the new percentages and the new dates and hit Apply and there you go.
