Citrix Access Gateway Advanced 4.5 Tutorials

Advanced Access Control Software / Installation Overview

Subtitles of the Movie

This is Citrix Access Gateway Advanced Edition 4.5 and in this video we're going to discuss some of the installation prerequisites for the Citrix Access Gateway Advanced Edition Software. Over the course of this title we're going to go over the installation of the software and how to configure the software once it is installed. We'll go over the Citrix License Server which Access Gateway Advanced Edition Software requires. The License Server is generally installed with any Citrix product that you install if there is not one already in the network then one can be installed when you install the Access Gateway Advanced Edition Software. We will show you how to do this in this tutorial and also the client software installation with the little pieces that have to be installed on the client workstation in order to access the resources through the Advanced Edition, Access Gateway or the Access Gateway Appliance. But first let's discuss the software prerequisites for the Access Gateway Advanced Edition Software. First off the software must be installed on either a Windows 2000 Server with SP4 or on a Windows Server 2003 Platform. Windows Server 2008 is available as of the time of this recording, however I do not believe that the Access Gateway Advanced Edition Software is certified for use on that platform. I have read where it does work but its not officially supported by Citrix at this time. Finally you have to have Internet information services installed on either Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 in order for the Access Gateway Advanced Edition Software to run. Obviously this is the case as the Advanced Edition Software is completely web based from the client end. You also have to have a Microsoft SQL Server installed in order to store the configuration information for the Access Gateway Advanced Edition Software. You can either use Microsoft SQL 2000 with SP4 or you can use SQL Server 2005 which is the preferred SQL Server Platform from Citrix. Although in a pinch if you have a small deployment or if its lab you can use the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. You also have to have a Microsoft SQL Server installed in order to hold the configuration information for the Access Gateway Advanced Edition. You can use either Microsoft SQL 2000 with SP4 or you can use SQL 2005 which is the preferred SQL Server Platform for the Access Gateway Advanced Edition or if you are really in a pinch you can use the SQL 2005 Express Edition. Obviously you have some limitations with the Express Edition but for tests or lab deployments or for very small deployments that may work just perfectly for you. Now some things that is important to note when you're installing the Access Gateway Advanced Edition Software. The Access Gateway Advanced Edition Software cannot be installed on an Domain Controller in your network or on a server that is also running Citrix Presentation Server. If either of those conditions are detected at the time of install, the install will not be proceed. Also, you have to have Microsoft MDAC 2.8 SP1 installed on the server that is running the Access Gateway Advanced Edition. This software is installed by default with Server 2003. If you're running it on a Windows Server 2000 platform you will have to manually download and install the MDAC Software from Microsoft. Also if you're going to use HTML Preview which we will touch on elsewhere in the tutorial you will have to have installed on your Advanced Edition Server Microsoft Office XP 2000 or 2003 in order to view the documents from that Office Suite. Also if you'll be supporting Microsoft Exchange in your Access Gateway Environment, with either web based e-mail or with Exchange Synchronization, be sure not to install Microsoft Outlook on your Advanced Edition Server. Doing so can pose a potential security risk with the way that the Access Gateway Software interacts with Outlook and the Operating System. Instead you should install the Exchange Management Tools off the Exchange Server CD-ROM. Next, we'll move on to the account prerequisites for the Access Gateway Advanced Edition Software. As we'll see in the installation portion of the title there are several user accounts that are used to transfer data between servers and transfer session state between servers and also for the front end web servers to contact the back end database servers. The only account prerequisite that's required for the installation purposes is that user account has to be a member of the domain users group in Active Directory. Once you give the installation program an account that meets this single criteria it is added to the local administrators group on the web servers and is given the rights to act as part of an operating system for Windows 2000 only. Log on as a Batch Job and log on as a Service. Also as an account prerequisite the password should set to never expire on this account, trust me lots of strange things can happen if your service account password expires and suddenly your entire Access Gateway Farm comes to a screeching halt because your web servers can't talk to your database servers and this concludes our installation prerequisites for Access Gateway Advanced Edition 4.5.
