Autodesk Revit Building 9 Tutorials

The Basics / Add a Roof and View its Section

Subtitles of the Movie

In this lesson, we will learn how to add a roof and view it in section. In the project browser, under floor plans, I will click level three. From the basics tab of the design bar, pick on roof and select roof by footprint. Revit Building shifts into sketch mode, just like the floor tool. There will be a flat roof below the parapet cap on the exterior walls. On the options bar, clear defines slow and make sure the extent to walk or check box is selected. Pick the interior surface of the walls, just like you did with the floor command. And then pick the finish roof button. Pick no to the attach wall to roof question box and click yes to the join or cut or overlap question box. This will join the geometry and cut the overlapping volume out of the walls. The exterior walls will extend past the roof to form a parapet and will not attach to it's underside but will trim their finished layers at the floor structure. This view will not change appearance when the roof is created. Double click on level one under floor plans. Pick the section tool on the basics tab. Pick a start point for the section line to the left of the upper window in the left wall. Pull the cursor to the right horizontally and pick a spot on the right of the wall to locate the section. You can select and move the section line so that it passes through the window if necessary. The project browser will not show a plus sign to the left of the new sections branch. Click on the plus sign to the left of the new sections and a new section one will appear in the project tree. Double click on section one to open that view. Then right click in the view window and select view properties. In the element properties dialog, change the detail level from coarse to medium. click OK a to close the element properties dialog. Pick on level to floor object itself in the view window. Use the type selector drop-down list to change it's type from generic to steel bar joist 14" VCT on concrete. Notice the appearance of the floor reflects that change. Now pick on the roof object in the view window. Use the type selector drop-down list to change it's type from generic to steel truss insulation on metal deck EPDM. Note the new appearance of the components. In this lesson, you have learned how to add a roof, create and open a model section view and change the floor and roof types. Save this project as this concludes this lesson.
