Design Modeling / Import External Content

Subtitles of the Movie

In this lesson, we will learn how to import external content. Open the file Chapter Three, Phase One .rvt from the previous exercise if you have closed it or continue with the open file. From the menu bar, select file, import link, CAD formats. In the import link dialog, use the look-in drop down to navigate to the folder that contains the file site plan, Chapter three .dwg. Select the file so that the name highlights in the folder contents window and the name appears in the file name field. A preview image will also appear. In the lower half of the dialog, check current view only under import or link. This will allow Revit Building to import text. Under layer level colors, select black and white. Make sure the import units under scaling reads auto detect and under positioning, make sure automatically place is selected and that center to center is selected. Click the open button to start the import. When the view window shows some line d work, type ZF to zoom to fit. When the cursor is placed anywhere over the imported object, a tool tip will appear that identifies it as an import symbol and so will the status bar and a border will appear around the import. Left click to select the imported symbol. The cursor will change appearance to a double-headed arrow to signify that you can now drag it to another position. The contour lines will change from black to red, Revit Building's color for selected items. The type properties drop-down list will show show the type category of the import, import symbol, site plan, Chapter Three .dwg. The properties icon will become active and other action buttons will become visible in the options bar. With the cursor over the selected symbol, right click and study the right-click context menu. With the object selected, commands available on the options bar are also available by using right click. In this case, we have commands like delete selected layers, full explode and partial explode and others. Move the cursor off the line work of the import symbol and left click to deselect it. Place the cursor in the design bar. If site is not in the stack of command tabs at the bottom of the design bar, right click to bring up the list of available tabs and choose site. This will add the tab to the project and make it the active one. From the site tab, select topo surface. The design bar shifts into sketch mode. The top of the design bar now reads topo surface and the command list changes. Select use imported and then use import instance. Then left click the import symbol to select it. The add points from selected layers dialog is displayed and all the layers in the AutoCAD drawing will be checked. Uncheck layer topo lines. Then select invert. This will isolate the topo lines layer as the only layer to use for creating 3-D points in a topo surface mesh. Choose ok to create the topo surface. Now choose properties from the topo surface sketch commands on the design bar. In the element properties dialog, change the material to site grass. And change the phase created to existing. Then click OK to exit the dialog. Select simplify surface. In the simplify surface dialog, highlight the three-inch value and enter one and press the tab key. This will change your number one to one feet. click OK. Select finish surface. Now zoom in region around the building. Then type in VG to bring up the visibility dialog. In the imported categories tab, uncheck topo lines and click OK. In the next lesson, we will take a look at how to make the new topo surface visible. This concludes this part of this lesson.
