The Interface / Safe Zones

Subtitles of the Movie

Safe Zones are going to be an ally for you, especially when you're creating short films to show clients or family and friends because there's nothing quite like the embarrassment of having the primary actor's face only show up half way or the text or the title showing in location of your current scene, once again, cut off in some fashion. So if we go to the Window Menu, you'll see that we have the Show Safe Zones Option. Now, all of a sudden you have an Action and a Title. Now, I'm not sure if you can see that so let me go ahead and just temporarily turn all this stuff off so you can see it. The Action Area has this little Blue Boundary and what you want to do is you want to make sure that the main action or the most important parts of your action stay inside of this Blue Box. So if you're blowing up the Death Star, you don't want to have the Death Star up here somewhere. You want to make sure it's right in the middle. So that the explosion can occur here and any extra debris or stuff like that can wind up out here. The other planets, you know, you could show a planet right there for example. And you're guaranteed to see the entire Death Star blowing up. Now, of course, if you are planning on blowing up a Death Star, you might want to talk to Mr. Lucas about that first. The Title Boundary is for text and if it's inside of this Blue Box, you are assured that your title will show up. I'll turn back on one of my layers here and as you see, I have a kitchen. So if I want to make sure these stools are going to be in here, I might want to just grab the picture, let me go ahead and move it up a little bit, and push it up so that I can get the stools inside of this Action Field here. Now, down here, of course, I know it's going to be cut off. So this is going to be a nice guide to make sure your prominent scenes do indeed show up. I'm going to right click on this kitchen and I'm going to add a Text Operator and I'll just go ahead and call it Cooking. And as you see here, I'm going to make sure this is going to be inside of the Title. I don't want it up here because when I watch my show I'm only going to see the bottom part of this chances are. And that's going to be pretty bad when your client's looking at that. So once again, make sure it's inside of this boundary. Now, it doesn't have to be this large. It can be any size. But make sure that it's once again inside of here. It's just a safety thing for you. You can, of course, do something like this and chances are good it will show up on your TV screen. But the Safe Zones will absolutely guarantee, or money back, by having it inside here that it will indeed show up. So Safety Zones, make sure you go to the Window Menu, Show Your Safe Zones and when you're done just turn them off. Doesn't hurt to work with them on because, you know, it's a great way to see what's going on in your film and one of my favorite things is that it helps me visualize what my audience is going to see. This is your TV screen here and you can not worry about everything that's hanging off the edges. And also make a lot less compositing and layout mistakes because you're focused on what's inside these little blue lines instead of what's out here.
