The Interface / Controls

Subtitles of the Movie

We already took a look at the Toolbar. Let's spend a little bit more time learning how the controls work inside of Combustion because as I mentioned before, they work in a slightly similar fashion to the way they work in applications such as Photoshop, whereas you choose a tool and the options for that tool appear up here. So if I want to Feather something, I can choose it from up here or if I want to change how my brush works, I click on my Brush and I can choose my options up here and my Opacity and that kind of thing. So those controls live in Combustion but they appear down here and they also change based on what you have selected. When they're ghosted out like this, that means that there is nothing available to you for whatever you have selected. In this case, I have nothing selected so of course there's nothing I can do. But I can change some things. I can go to my Settings, I can go to my Output and I can change things such as the NTSC, the PAL, that kind of thing; my Width, my Height, my Pixel Aspect Ratio, by Background Color and the most important thing I think is whether in 2D or 3D Mode. But let's say I want to add some particles. And I want to see those controls for the particles. I have to first of all add that operator. So I'll go to one of my layers here, I'll right click, I'll choose to Add a Particle Operator and voila; the Toolbar changes to give me my Particle Tools and my Particle Controls take center stage. So I have a whole bunch of different tools that weren't here before, such as Emitters, Particles, Behaviors, Shapes and Settings. These all change based on the controls in this tab. So if I click on my Earth Layer, which is just the footage, I can Transform it, I can Work with the Layer, the Surface Properties, my Camera Settings and Output. And this is really a handy, intuitive way to work. The cool thing about the controls is that they live next to the other controls, so I have my Tracker, my Audio Controls, Operators, which I can use at any time, and my Timeline for animation. As you see, I'm on my Earth Layer. I'm looking at my footage here. But don't worry. I'll talk more about animation later on. Keep in mind though that the controls are right here in the Timeline for animation. And I can twirl things up and twirl down to see what's going on. So I can animate my lights, cameras and so on. So, I can also double click on an operator to change the Toolbar if it doesn't change so I can be on that particular level of the Workspace. The little TV Screen tells me that that's where I'm looking at in my Viewport and the Arrow tells me that this is the level of the composite that I'm currently focusing on.
